Can you say roughly what province, region or state you were in? It looks like a painted or map turtle by my roughest guess but I don’t live where those do so I’m not familiar enough to make more than a vague guess.
To me it looks like a red-eared slider, based on the shell patterning/shape. Would be much easier to confirm if not tucked in.
Edit: Looking at a list of species, it’s also possible it could be an Eastern river cooter.

If not looks like a yellow belly…
OP’s location is Indiana, if they were driving in state, yellow belly sliders are not native there.
