Very true i like to joke i dont own snakes i own tanks but if its 1 in the morning they are out exploring
We’ve not been handling, adjusting substrate and things for humidity levels, but as said earlier my fiance did want to weigh him for peace of mind.
Any time she’s opened the Viv he’s popped his head out to say hello, but generally he’s been left home alone all day.
We’ve decided that we’ll leave him alone for now until his next feed, which I’m aware with BP’s can be difficult in a new enclosure so I’m already looking into a better way of enticing him into food when he’s ready.
As for hides he’s got a few, along side a tree stump in the centre for climbing and exploring, and he’s got lots of leaves to create way of him being unseen. From what I can gather he’s spent all day exploring his new home due to his last home being a lot smaller. The pic just happens to be an open spot where his hide normally is, which has since been replaced
I’m not a fan of the BP reddit. I was recently banned for 30 days because I responded to a post where the BP had what looked to be a fully retained shed (looked crispy) and was obviously dehydrated and suggested they soak the animal to encourage drinking and so it could absorb through its vent. It was deemed harmful and inaccurate advise. Reading the care sheet on Reddit, they say soaking stresses a snake out and it’s old thinking, or something like that, and suggest raising the humidity. Internal hydration is FAR more important than external hydration and while it may be a tad stressful to soak the animal for awhile, leaving it dehydrated and stuck in an old shed seems way more stressful and inhumane to me! I think stuff like this keeps keepers with experience from trying to help. I’ve been keeping for 18 years and care deeply for my animals.
Smdh
I think its really harmful of them to put that as one of their rules in grounds for banning people, especially if its over something that could save the snake’s life…
Soaking a BP isn’t harmful or stressful for the snake if its done RIGHT.
Soaking in 80-82°F water that doesn’t go up further than a quarter of the height of their body is fine for them.
Ive had to soak my albino and he didnt seem to mind at all if anything he enjoyed it and felt relief from it and was putting his head in the water to(at the time he got mites from somewhere still dont know how they came in but it was taken care of) and one of the local reptile breeders and education center said he soaks all his snakes once a week for prevention of mites since their operation also takes in rescues and him and the other have soaked themselves in their water bowls when they felt like it i dont see how thats grounds for banning someone for giving good advice?
As for a fist feeding ive seen a lot of people say that if they refuse for to long try “braining” the frozen thaw but with mine as long as i got it really warm and let them check it out for a little bit they struck others have said to heat the head with a hair dryer around the tank to get the smell in and get them in food mode if they r being picky i warm my rats up with hot water they might refuse the 1st feeding but as long as they start eating soon they r fine these guys can go on food strikes without being unhealthy as long as its not to long a period so 1 missed feeding while getting used to u isnt something that will harm them
Omg that’s stressful for sure. Honestly I don’t worry about them being too chunky until they’re over a year old. They’re growing babies. At that point I’ll start weaning back on how often or what size depending on the snake.
I’m sure once he starts hitting a growth spurt he’ll slim down. These little guys will also sometimes not poop for a while if they’re getting close to shedding, so the sausage butts can happen. That can still give that overweight look too.
This! As babies, snakes are generally putting their calories towards growth. I wouldn’t think that obesity would really be a concern until the snake is at or near sexual maturity. So long as your feeding schedule and prey size are reasonable, I don’t think obesity needs to be a big worry at this stage of life.
THIS🙌🏻 I needed this reassurance, in fairness everyone on this post has put my mind at rest whilst everyone on my fiancés Reddit has made me question the entire situation.
Many thanks to all of you guys for helping me
Looks perfectly healthy to me. A photo showing the tail will help though.
These people here know what they’re talking about and will give you their honest experienced opinions even though sometimes it’s not always what you might want to hear.
