African House Snakes - Inspiration Exotics 2024 Adventure!

This is true for mine as well. They’re all well accustomed to handling from the time they hatch, and socialization and behavior are just as important to my breeding programs as gif health and beautiful morphs. It all contributes to the animals having an easy way of living with humans, which contributes to hopefully a successful, long, life.

These are some good suggestions. Thank you so much for the in-depth response, @noodlehaus! Keeping in pairs is definitely something I’ve been wanting to try, and I think the house snakes are a good species to try it on since they’re so small and because they’re not known to cannibalize each other. I’m thinking I might start with a few pairs together, and depending on how those go, I may convert all of them.

If it works for you, sometimes that’s all that matters.

Honestly I wish more breeders, especially bigger breeders, kept things like this in mind. A well adjusted animal is going to have everything it needs to thrive in captivity without being overly stressed, which is what we should be aiming for in the long run.

@inspirationexotics It’s always worth giving something a try, and if it doesn’t work out, you can always switch things up again.

@noodlehaus @caryl

When you talk about socialization I know you are talking about human interaction of course. But Jess when you talk about keeping in pairs, trios, etc do hatchlings learn to “socialize” with others of their own kind? I am sure not but I had to ask.

I fully realize that snakes in general are not “social animals” so I’m just curious….

While I haven’t observed them enough to really be able to give a solid answer, I suspect they do take behavioral cues from their siblings. I’ve found that putting more skittish hatchlings with their braver siblings tends to make the fearful ones calm down a lot easier.

There’s so much we don’t know about snakes, including how they interact and socialize the in wild. We know some species do better in groups as adults (for example, Garter snakes), no reason to think the same may not apply to youngsters of other species at times.

Generally speaking, I would also think that they take behavioral cues from their siblings. Especially when snakes first hatch, they are often going to stick around the same area - if for no other reason than they’re small and it’s harder to get further away. I would expect that in the wild they encounter siblings regularly for at least a period of time after hatching. In captivity, I know many breeders who anecdotally agree that putting more skittish animals in with braver ones improves the temperament of the more skittish or shy siblings. There’s enough anecdotal evidence out there for me to feel comfortable giving it a try. I’m a hobby breeder primarily focused on health and temperament for pet sales, so I want my animals to be as well socialized as they can be.

The above makes perfect sense to me. As long as supervision is administered especially during feeding.

But only for Certain Species……

Thanks guys! :pray:.

Some updates! My last baby (a female) from my first clutch is finally eating again - she stopped for a while and I tried to entice her with live. It didn’t work the first couple of times but it did after a few tries, and then she took a f/t scented with mouse bedding, so I think we’re making progress again. Out of the 5 from the second clutch, 3 are eating regularly, and 2 out of 4 from the last clutch are eating regularly. Looking forward to having a few more of these guys available. Here are some pictures I took last time I went through and cleaned enclosures.

My last babies hatched yesterday! These are the final three from last year’s clutches and they’re set up in a baby bin now waiting for them to have their first shed.
