This season I repeated a Bantam pairing that gave me a clutch with many problem starters last season. First feeding attempt was last night. 16 of 17 ate! I’m very relieved. Here are a few of them, including a Bantam Saffron and a Bantam Peppermint Shatter.

For sure. They came from tiny Bantam eggs, so they’re all small. 4.7-5.3g. But they took 1.5g micro pinks that weren’t even de-legged.

You can’t gross me out visually, I’ve done way too many disgusting things in labs, at work and at home trying to deal with members of The Resistance. But my oh my, I can surely get grossed out in the olfactory realm! One summer a few years back, it seemed like all I was doing was trying to feed snakes who preferred starvation to anything I was offering (I totally shared that aversion!). If I had had two years in a row of that, it might have done me in.

Last year was like that for me. Now I’m somewhat desensitized to the stink of anole and exploded force-fed pinks. But not completely. Every once in a while I have a “what the heck am I doing?” pause.

This brings back memories from the dark ages when I was in a high school biology class. We had to dissect worms in a morning class. For lunch we were served spaghetti.

I’m pretty squeamish, so I definitely have to go to my “it’s for the babies” compartment a lot.

Yup! Had to nod and laugh big time here! I’m not actually the squeamish sort about most things. Visually doesn’t bother me, hands-on doesn’t bother me. I am, however, acutely aware of scents. Most of them I can tolerate but, gee whiz, some send me right to that compartment!

Dissecting and lunch… now you’ve taken me back. One of the dissections I had my Marine Biology classes do was dogfish sharks. It was 3 day dissection, followed by a lab test. Sharks store a tremendous amount of oil in their livers for buoyancy. Fish liver oil is VERY “fragrant.” After a couple days of handling these all day long, even with gloves on, I was also very fragrant. I was standing at the end of the cafeteria line and heard one student say in all seriousness to another, “Smells like we having fish today.” I sheepishly confessed that no, no fish on the menu, that was me. One kid asked a bunch of excited questions. The other looked deeply horrified.
Actual lunch entrée that day: chicken spaghetti.
