Hi so can someone explain to me how do i use a punnet square to calculate offsprings? I pair a tangerine extreme harleq with tangerine tricolor, i don’t know why tricolor has to be only in small letters and also how do I calculate if I pair my Red Lw with lavender how do i implement that into a punnet, can someone help with me calculating my projects?
Punnett squares don’t work very well with cresties for several different reasons; One is that they’re polymorphic by nature, which means that the lowest number of traits you can isolate appears to be 3, but most geckos will have 5-6-7 if not more different traits. Two geckos within the same morph could in theory be quite different genetically, meaning a “red LW” is not simply a “red LW”. Maybe it also has dalmatian spots, pinstriping, snowflaking, tangerine, all traits that could alter the offspring from those of another “red LW”. Another is that their genetics are still not very well mapped out, and people don’t necessarily agree on how they work. The theory that most people seem to follow is the one by LMReptiles though, but there are others. Thirdly, since their genetics are not very well mapped out, there’s a ton of traits whose inheritance pattern aren’t even just up for discussion, but aren’t even mapped out at all, meaning most all pairings can produce so-called oddballs, that may or may not be affected by traits that are yet to be mapped. Also, some cresties morphs like tricolour is not based on the genotype, but rather the phenotype. Since punnett squares only tells you the genotype, morphs like that can’t be plugged into one.
So because of that, punnett squares are mainly useful in terms of the more simple morphs, such as the possibility of getting a frappuccino or a super fire. All in all, crestie genetics are still a bit of a mess to work with, but that’s what makes it fun!
I dont know much about genetics and morphs myself but there is a morph calculator u can use to in MorphMarket
The only morph calculators on Morphmarket for geckos are for Leopard geckos and African fat tail geckos.
As AutumnGeckos stated above, most crestie traits are polymorphic. The a calculator is run like a punnet square, so it can’t be used for those traits. If one does get made, only genotype morphs can be plugged that way.
Ah ive only looked at it for the ball pythons a little bit
