Xanths/Yellow-crested (Trioceros jacksonii xantholophus)

Trioceros jacksonii xantholophus, or “Xanths” as they are affectionately known, are the largest of the subspecies. They are an overall lemon-lime green with the males having yellow spikes down their backs which earns them their common name of “Yellow-crested Jackson’s Chameleon”. The males have three horns while the females have none. There are occasionally specimens of females with small attempts at h [1]

Mt. Meru (Trioceros jacksonii merumontanus)

Trioceros jacksonii merumontanus, or the Mt. Meru Jackson’s Chameleon, is found on Mt. Meru in Tanzania. It is a much higher elevation chameleon and so is acclimated to deeper nighttime temperature drops and higher UVB levels. It is small and sometimes called the Dwarf Jackson’s Chameleon. This is a colorful species with extra long horns for its little body. The females will have one horn. [2]

Jacksonii/Machakos Hills (Trioceros jacksonii jacksonii)

Trioceros jacksonii jacksonii is a catch-all subspecies which covers everything which isn’t a T.j.xantholophus and isn’t a T.j.merumontanus. And that is quite a bit. It covers diverse populations that appear different, are geographically isolated, and live at different elevations. There is no doubt that this subspecies will be broken up further. The most notable member of this subspecies comes from the Machakos Hills region. The Machakos Hills Jackson’s Chameleon is of a smaller build than the Xanths, but the brightest colored males have a vibrant yellow swash across their flank and blue cheeks. The females cause no end to confusion as they, too, can have horns. They will have either three horns like the male or one rostral horn. Their elevation is similar to T.j.xantholophus and their care is identical. [3]

The most exhaustive list of local forms of Furcifer pardalis (Panther Chameleons) is on Madcham: Local forms of Furcifer pardalis – Madcham.de

Even though there are some which we don’t have in captivity, they could hit the market, and it probably makes sense to just add them all as an option now.

I like Kim’s strategy of putting color designations within locales because that is how we think about it. I would add “wild type” and/or “rainbow” to span all locales because there are plenty of individuals which don’t fit cleanly into one category or another from a color designation standpoint. We already force-categorize many individuals, and it’d be nice if the category upgrade doesn’t encourage that.

When we finish the genetic marker piece, that will actually be slightly less specific than locale because there are a few haplogroups which span multiple locales (in places where they inter-breed in the wild). That will be very interesting to see when it comes together.

Subcategories should include any of the commonly kept species as well as an “other species” section for the odd balls that hit the market now and again. I would have a section for panthers, parsons, veilds, carpets, pigmy chameleons, and a section for other species. You could even scrap pigmys into the “other” section as well because they are not available very often. There also needs to be a huge list of panther localities. The section usually used to input genetic traits could be used for localities since there are no morphs in panthers. That way, even crosses can be labeled by their combination of localities. This would work well for the different variations of ambilobe, purple ambanjas, true blue nosy Be’s, and other line bred traits as well.
