No they do understand where food comes from. That’s the point. This is only the beginning…….
Looks like they killed it already guys =D
Yay:) Not at all surprised that that’s how it went
Hey all i have great news. Cooied this from a Denver news station
Colorado pet registry bill postponed indefinitely days after being introduced following intense backlash
Less than a week after a bill that aimed to create an online pet registry in Colorado was introduced, the sponsor of the legislation told Denver7 it has been postponed indefinitely.
Whoot whoot!
I did actually get an intern written form e-mail back from my state senator but nothing from my rep or another state house representative on the committee. Hopefully they were too overwhelmed with emails to reply.
You’re a bit late on the same article. Lol.
Still is good news.
It’s been postponed indefinitely for the moment, but that doesn’t mean someone won’t try to do it again.
It’s good to follow USARK for updates on these sorts of things too.
Some scummy politician who thinks they know something.
Here, in canada the (in)humane societies have made press releases claiming geckoes are causing salmonella outbreaks. There has not been a single documented case come from health canada that can be directly tied to reptiles.
This is fear mongering at its finest, set forth by ignorant people dwelling on peoples fears to further their agenda.
I’ve spent hours on the phone and emailing the news services about this. Fortunately they, the news people, have to fact check before publishing it as real news.
One thing I have learned being an exotic animal keeper is to keep up on this type of garbage.
Glad to hear the bill was postponed cuz the next step is a ban.
Another thing I’ve learned is that if you define the word terrorist you will find that peta and the spca as well as hsus all fit perfectly as defined.
Apologies for the rant. I have been fighting this way for @4 decades.
While I agree that there’s a lot of fear mongering, regardless, it is better that the public at least has awareness.
Toxoplasmosis is a worry for pregnant women cause it can be spread to the fetus. You can get it from scooping litter boxes … But most cases are from eating undercooked pork.
Yes, you can get salmonella from reptiles, it is less common in leopard geckos than in iguanas or turtles…but still possible if your gecko is experiencing symptoms. But most people probably get it from undercooked chicken, eggs or raw fish.
Not every incident is reported. I for one DID catch psittacosis from sick canaries. There’s supposedly only 5 cases in the US a year.
Owning reptiles for years has exposed me to a number of rodent bites. Heck I think most owners had experienced at least one. A child purchased a rat at a big box store and died of rat bite fever a week later in my area. No one explained that the rat can make the kid ill if it bit them. They just handed them a flyer
I am absolutely for public knowledge of what zoonotic risks that they are exposed to. If people already know the risks, they have no excuses to say they weren’t aware of the monsters lurking under the bed.
Politicians will always get involved in stupid ways… But a little blurb on a gecko cage stating reptiles can carry salmonella that pet stores here are required to have is definitely preferred over a mother freaking out about never being told the risks and her child coming down with it.
