Got 3 eggs in the clutch. One baby is a plain anery. One baby is charcoal, possibly carbon. And then there’s this guy. Too contrasty for a typical blizzard (but maybe red factor is enhancing contrast?), but not anywhere near as contrasty as a typical snow (even my red factor snows had more contrast than this). Iris is a clear red rather than the white tint of a typical snow.
First picture is before first shed, then after shed in indirect light, then with clutchmates in bright light, and finally compared to my non-red factor snow motley.
Pretty! I haven’t worked with Snows for a long time, but it doesn’t seem like it’s outside of a Coral Snow’s range of variation. But it sounds like you’re more knowledgeable than I am about that.
The color is actually the goal of this project! I was wondering why everyone was so focused on the coral and salmon snows when blizzards are right there and a much purer white base for the red factor genes to work on. Was it that red factor doesn’t show up with charcoal as a base? But I never saw anyone even trying. And so here I am.
That’s a good question. My thinking is that Charcoal is so much better at killing red than Anery is that you can’t really make a pink-adult Blizzard.
BUT I have an adult Whiteout who has always looked like it has a slight pink cast that the Blizzards I used to own didn’t have. Even as an adult. And she produced Bloodreds and Bloodred Tesseras that had some really red examples. Pics don’t pick up the Whiteout’s pinks well, so there’s not much point in posting a pic of her.
Well, he’s very handsome. I don’t work with Charcoal (always intended to but it just hasn’t happened) so I can’t give personal experience with that, let alone with RF and Charcoal. But I’ve been playing with RF for a while. I wouldn’t rule out RF Snow from these pics. Fwiw, here’s a freshly shed RF or Super RF Strawberry Avalanche. His eyes are similar to your baby’s.
your baby’s eyes still have that white shading that my little boy completely lacks. They look instead like his snow motley-stripe father’s eyes.
If nothing else, he’s somehow ended up with better color than his dad had at hatching, so hopefully he’ll be an even better colored adult and I can use him to try again since he is het charcoal.
I know you keep good track of the genetics in your projects. Like I said, I haven’t produced Charcoal stuff though I have had a few over the years. But you know what the 3rd image makes me think of, eyes-wise? Opal, especially the ones I’ve got with some other color enhancer like RF or Peach. Probably just my screen…
I realized belatedly that this sounded weird. I didn’t mean to imply that there was anything Lavender-related in your Snow vs Blizzard ID hell. I was just struck by the gorgeous jewel-like quality of the baby’s eyes. The eyes of Opals always seem especially jewel-like to me, and yours reminded me of that. My phrasing was awkward. I apologize.
