In preparation to promote Dart Frogs to a top level category, we need to build a trait list for the genes and combos.

For each of these, we need to know what kind of gene it is (recessive/incdom/dom) OR what combination of genes represent it.

Galactonotus is actually Adelphobates, not dendrobates. There’s also various Phyllobates such as P. Vittatus, P. Terribilis (As far as I know there is a golden and mint variety of this one), P. Bicolor, and P. Aurotaenia. I’ve only seen Vittatus and Terribilis for sale though.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, every time I look at our ads on MM for Dart Frogs, they’re disorganized and there’s ads from other species in there as well that aren’t Dart Frogs. Overall, I think this is a category we really need to organize by species and then locale, (ex. Oophaga> pumilio >Nicaraguan Strawberry Blue Jeans/Bastimentos/Bisira, or Ranitomeya> fantastica> True Nominal/Varadero/Chazuta) and not describe the locales as morphs. We can organize this by species/locale much more accurately, in a way that’s simpler to navigate for both buyers and sellers, I feel, and it also gives the proper impression of how dart frog locales should be kept, rather than letting beginner dart frog keepers and enthusiasts see “morph” and and thinking that means interbreeding is possible as with reptiles like ball pythons and boas, and although it is, I intend to make my point about the impression this leaves as one invested in the “hobby”. (I absolutely hate to refer to keeping and breeding as a hobby, this is a science, and an art) If I get the opportunity to later on tonight, I’d like to attempt to present something similar to my example based on our current listings and how we could possibly reorganize them.

Alright, so here we have two examples of the webpage after making some changes to the way our current stock was categorized. I did not modify the number bubbles on the overview page, so they are inaccurate. I also do not have access to whatever font(s) we use for the website, so it looks a bit different but you get the idea.

In summary, our categories for species currently available are as follows:

As for locales, such as D. terribilis locales Blackfoot and Mint, I believe they should be in the D. terribilis section together, with the additional locales for all other species to be done the same way.

For example, we have at least 9 different locales of the species Dendrobates auratus:
Blue and Black, Bocas Del Toro, Golden, Green and Black, Green and Bronze, Highland Bronze, Reticulated Blue and Black, Super Green, and Turquoise and Black.

The way it’s currently organized, most of these are in the Other Category under Dart Frogs, with 4 in the “Green and Black (D. auratus)” category.

Now, there’s also several listings I came across that don’t belong in the Dart Frog category.

Mantella aurantiaca
Mantella betsileo
Mantella nigricans
Mantella viridis

These are all species of mantella, which although is similar in size and shares some similar physical attributes, they are an entirely different type of frog. We should have Mantella in Other Amphibians category, in their own section there along with Bullfrogs, Horned Toads, Toads, Other Frogs, Salamanders, Newts, and Other(Amphibia).

Additionally, Atelopus barbotini is a toad, and should be in the Toads section within the Other Amphibians category.

I love this idea. I think it would make it much more organized. Right now if I were looking for a frog I’d have to look at the species subcategory and the other subcategory which defeats the purpose of the species subcategory.

I believe this is a case of sellers using the wrong category, however as we increase category count we will keep this in mind.

@eaglereptiles to be completely honest, coming from keeping dart frogs myself, it’s actually mildly confusing to use common names, as most of them are labeled as their locales, such as Bocas Del Toro, although a majority are labeled by coloration based on that locale. So I don’t use common names, and I suppose we could, but in a purist sense, most people looking to buy dart frogs seriously will find it unnecessary to label them with the common names.

I suppose what I’m saying is common names, in reference to dart frogs, is a bit of a relevant term, because most people that keep dart frogs don’t go by the “common name”.

I know of some hobbyists that won’t even buy from places that use common names (and some tarantula keepers too).

Absolutely, and this is a major reason behind why I recommend the format without common names being used, at least not as our primary label of a species. If you told me you had Golden Poison Dart Frogs, but couldn’t identify the scientific name, even if I told it to you, I probably wouldn’t do business with you, because there’s always a chance of mix ups with locales and species. Take Ranitomeya, for example. There are Ranitomeya imitator, and Ranitomeya fantastica, and you have R. imitator “Varadero”… But there’s also R. fantastica “Varadero”. Now, here’s the thing. R. imitator was formerly known as Dendrobates imitator. This frog is commonly known as the “Mimic Poison Dart Frog” , due to it’s apparent mimickry of other thumbnail species that occur sympatrically. Now, R. imitator IS a poison dart frog, just to clear up any confusion, this imitation they refer to is imitation of other species of Ranitomeya, such as fantastica, but have been identified as a separate species. But that’s one locale of an entire species that gets that “Mimic” common name and it’s the entire R. imitator species that’s actually in consideration of being mimics, that all are from different localities and look different than the rest of the species. Following that, R. fantastica “Varadero” do not have a common name, as far as I am able to research. So you see how that can be confusing?

Would labeling tags with the short hand names cause any confusion or is there a need for the full name?
For example…

  • A. macero

Could we even remove the subspecies from the name completely and it still make sense within the community?

Such as:

So now we have that worked out.

What about actual phenotype morphs in each locale. What do we have?

For example, are we seeing any Albino/Axanthic/Leucistic Hyloxalus fascianigrus?

I’m not totally sure but would it go something like this? Dart Frogs → Ranitomeya → Fantastica? Or would it be best to have every single species, since the ones that don’t have ads won’t show up?
There are albino dart frogs but they aren’t widely available yet.
