I assume @caryl will chime in shortly after she sees the number of times I’ve tagged her in this thread, haha.
@ckhirnigs113 Could you please provide a picture of the tank Candy Cane is going to start out in? That way we can see where any escape routes might be. Your girl will be quite a bit thicker the a baby so I think your only concern would be the doors/screen.
Since mine are in tubs I use the little office clippy things that pinch together, on the sides of the tubs.
Yes, that’s why I don’t want to answer for her.
I will post some pictures tonight when I get home. It has two locking screen panels on top, so I think it is secure up there. The plastic center divider between the two screen lid panels was warped and sagging downwards just do to age I think. I added a strip of cardboard on top of the plastic and then wrapped it in duct tape so there would no longer be a gap. I’ll take some close-ups of this tonight to see what y’all (yes, I’m from Alabama) think of my fix.
. That’s funny! I’m in IN and I worked in an office of a factory that seemed to “fix” everything with duct tape!
Hi everybody. I love this community. @ckhirnigs113 , you’ve gotten lots of great input from a lot of caring, fantastic people.
As far as your specific snake, she’s a super reliable feeder. I don’t use tongs except for with certain babies who are soon getting the hang of things and need tease feeding. They’re fed in delis when they’re smaller. She’ll eat in a separate enclosure if you want. She’ll eat on newspaper/plain paper in her enclosure. I imagine she’ll eat from tongs if you wish. She’s just a calm, sweet baby.
Knowing this animal, and with her being a yearling, you can use the larger tank if you want IF it is TOTALLY SECURE. Do provide lots of cover for her to explore. Any ports for cords which might be built in must be plugged. The lid/doors must be totally snug. Snakes can and do use their very muscular bodies to shove through very small spaces. That said, if it’s secure, I don’t think she’ll be hard to catch. I don’t actually know how long she is, but I will check. I rarely measure length as they’re rarely stretched at full length lol. When they exceed the length of two adjacent sides of their enclosures, it’s time to move up.
She’s used to UTH and ambient light. The room she’s in gets good north light through the windows. That’s plenty although you can provide supplementary light if you want. Animals with less/no melanin can develop cataracts from too much UV, so avoid lighting with full spectrum or UVA. UVB appears safe by the science isn’t certain about its helpfulness. Corns don’t often bask in nature and are most active when nature’s lights are dim.
I’ll stop there, but will say congrats again on this sweet. Snake. I know you’re daughter is going to be thrilled.
I actually tried to brace it from below with a 2x4 at first, but that ended up cracking the plastic. My daughter screamed, “You broke it! It’s ruined!” I said, “Let me get the duct tape. I can fix this.” She didn’t believe me, but I think I managed to fix it better than even I expected to. I didn’t like the idea of a 2x4 in the middle of the enclosure either, even if we covered it with vines and stuff.
Just make sure none of the adhisive is where the snake can touch
I grew up in Southern Indiana with Kentucky family. We all said y’all, which my Mississippi students found surprising.
Language and culture lesson: the first Eurpoeans to settle in the South were the French and Spanish. These Romance languages have a singular and a plural form of second person pronoun, both of which are simply “you” in English. “Y’all” is a way of making English more precise, which just makes good sense if y’all ask me.
If its moving and it shouldnt use duct tape if its not moving and it should use wd40 lol nebraska here
Got distracted thinking about French class. Lol
Meant to add, Chris, be sure that there’s no tape where the snake can get to it. Snakes and duct tape are a bad combination.
I may have to cover the taped section with some fabric or something so there’s no way the snake can get into contact with the adhesive. Thanks for the warning!
I think you sent this to the wrong person Samantha. I think you meant to send it to Chris.
As a matter of fact snakes and Any tape are a bad combo!
Yes “Maaay yum”. Makes a bushel and a peck of sense to me!
It was just the general thing of how to fix stuff from where u were i coulda hit the wrong reply button whoops im still getting used to my new phone and its autocorrect and this app i love it though noone wants to talk snakes with me at home lol
No worries! And yeah nobody wants to talk snakes with me either! Except here!
Haha. So true! That’s why I enjoy all of you…ahem, I mean y’all…so much! This is a great tribe!
