Friend's ball python not eating after laying

Bowl wrapping in BPs is usually more of a sign they’re getting ready for ovulation. Bowls tend to be cooler and help the follicles develop.
Some females will bowl wrap after you take the eggs though and that’s more of a confused reaction to not knowing where the eggs went if you don’t get around to tub cleaning and bathing mom to get rid of the egg smell and such.

Ok! Thank you @armiyana! Even though I’m not a breeder I still like to try to understand what you guys are talking about! Now genetics and morph mixing? Forgot it! Lol!

Ok I am done! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts::pray::snake::blush::+1:

Hey everyone! I’m super unfamiliar with MM and in addition to life life-ing, it took me a moment to get back with you guys. But I appreciate everyone’s thoughtful responses!

In the spirit of spreading what I’ve learned in case this thread proves helpful in the future:

  • He was worried about the discoloration as well and thought it might be from the coco, but he soaked her a couple of times but the color remained. He’s very anal-retentive about changing his coco due to the aforementioned shady breeder. But he uses coco husk, like the chunky kind.

  • After soaking her she plumped up and wasn’t as fold-y. She was likely too lethargic to drink her water so she was definitely dehydrated.

  • Her babies literally hatched a couple weeks ago, they’re super cute btw, but he didn’t have a reason to suspect anything was amiss at the time. She was active, if a bit sluggish, so he just thought she was recovering.

  • There was no blood at all. He sent me a picture of her after she just laid her eggs and there was nothing at all outwardly to show she was ill. She went from a snake that looked like she needed to recover to suddenly being really sick looking.

Onto what happened:

Unfortunately she passed away before he could reach the vet, not long after the post. He lives in a rural area in another country so vet options are a little slim.

He had reached out to a local breeder with much more experience, who said it appeared that due to the indent and discoloration of her cloaca, she may have torn something upon laying her eggs and died of an infection. Her eggs were definitely were on the larger side so it makes sense.

Thank you everyone for your input! I’m sorry to report the sad news but he’s learned a lot from this whole ordeal and he appreciates your help. And I hope this will help someone else out in the future.

Oh no. Do pass our condolences to him. I know other non-reptile people often don’t understand how we love our pets as much as we love cats and dogs, and it’s hard to lose one especially so abruptly. Sounds like he did all he could do for her. Egg laying has its risks and it just didn’t go right this time. I hope the babies grow up healthy and give him some comfort.

I’m so sorry to hear she passed, I hate that there isn’t sufficient access or even veterinary care in general for reptiles. As @athleticshoelace said, please do pass on our condolences. It’s never easy losing an animal you love.

I would not be surprised if it were a tear, rupture, or some form of torsion. Unfortunately breeding comes with risks, and while we all hope to never have to be confronted with the poor outcomes, sometimes it does happen.

Please send my condolences to your friend.
We tend to get very attached to our pets. They become more of a family member than just a pet. I look at all of mine as my children especially not having any kids of my own.
I had a Silver Arawana years ago. Introduce a something into the tank with feeder fish. By the time I noticed a problem , it was too late. I cried and felt a tremendous lose from a fish I raised from a two inch fry. She was over 2 feet long when I lost her.
My heart goes out to your friend.

So absolutely sorry this happened, it’s the absolute worst when a loved one leaves us, including our scaly little buddies. I hope she had a good life and hope those memories will amount to something in comfort. Agreeing on most likely just something when wrong with her having eggs that most likely wouldn’t be seen or noticed until it was too late, I’m in no place to speak about pregnancy issues with snakes since I don’t have experience breeding specifically snakes but I understand how hard and confusing it can be to lose a mother of new baby animals, and to lose that animal in the first place.
