hi! i’m new here but i need help urgently i apologize for the inconvenience !
my 10 months old crested gecko seems to be having an issue with his cloaca. i guess it’s a prolapsed hemipene that got infected however i was told by the person i bought him from that it wasn’t as there was no organ to be seen, which is why i didn’t think much of it before but now that he’s showing himself i can see it looks awful.
i thought it could be poop on the left and a sperm plug on the right but after research it does look like a prolapse and an infection on top of it as his cloaca seems bruised (self inflicted though).
i’m gonna try a soak again but it’s obviously not gonna work as it is more serious now, and we’re not really on handling terms so i dont even know if i’ll be able to do it.
i am very worried and the temperatures here are 40°C in the shade, is it worth taking the risk to take him to the vet an hour away ? anyway i’m gonna go cry now :)))))
i’m gonna have to wait a couple days since i dont have a car at my big age and no one can take me there either i just hope he’ll be ok in the meantime, thank you for your reply !
Yes absolutely take him to the vet, it looks like both hemipenes might be infected (they don’t have to prolapse to get infected, debris could have gotten stuck on the hemipenes while they were everted or there might have been an injury of some kind).
Agree that it definitely looks like a pretty nasty infection, and will require vet care and antibiotics. Poor little guy.
Even though you don’t have transportation right now, I’d still recommend calling an exotics vet that treats reptiles sooner rather than later. Like, today. Because appointments fill up fast, and calling today might get you an appointment later this week if you’re lucky. Often they’ll be booked up until a week or two out from when you call, so the sooner you call, the better. This is especially true if you don’t already have a relationship with the vet in question.
