ID? Thoughts?

Pairing was: male- (Mojave, yellow belly, pied, het hypo) x female- (black pastel) with exceptional color and pattern. I always hoped she’d prove hurricane. Picked up the orphan female from a disgruntled girlfriend who was selling her ex boyfriend’s collection. She wasn’t sure what she was selling. I got her for $60🙀

Baby in question:

Parents:

Black pastel, mojave, yellow belly baby from same clutch for comparison:

I suspect hurricane, black pastel, mojave, yellow belly, 100% het pied 50% het hypo?:pray:

Did the girlfriend say anything about hurricane? If not I honestly wouldn’t bank too much on it unless the guy was a more serious hobby breeder himself. It’s not a common gene. But that one baby definitely looks pretty wild.

The first is what I would have IDed as a Mojave, blk pastel YB het pied. For the hypo hets… No way to be sure unless you genetic test for now. Again… Hurricane is a little iffy to say but something is going on.

I would honestly say Black magic for the second and not YB… But I haven’t worked/seen enough with YB in this combo enough to really say for sure… Mojave Blk Pastel is pretty polymorphic. Is it the faint pixel line between the tan and the white that gives it away?

Thank you for the reply. The pixelated sides and the heavy yellow blushing definitely makes it a pretty strong case, especially when comparing to the other Black pastel, Mojaves in the clutch. I’m for sure going to hold on to that girl and the Mojave black pastel with yellow sides and see what happens.

Good luck for sure! I’m pretty sure the first one will be a great holdback regardless! Gorgeous snake and the crazy pattern

The reason I was kind of questioning the YB on the one is this girl…
I picked her up last year and I’ve got my fingers crossed for her breeding for me this year. She’s off food at the moment, but still haven’t seen any locks. =

Lesser Black Pastel and the previous owner thinks the 3rd gene is Satin…but Satin is such a subtle gene so who knows. She has some gorgeous fade and markings so I couldn’t say no. But like Mojave and Blk Pastel… So much polymorphic potential, ID can be a mess sometimes. She doesn’t have YB and I never got to see baby photos. She has that gorgeous blushing up the sides tho.

Oh yeah, dang she looks really nice! Great color as an adult too.

Looking at the blushing on the sides of your girl I do see some nice lesser/butter blushing. We had a very pretty single gene lesser girl with some really pretty blushing like that.

After looking into the possibilities further I think it’s more likely Yb, Od, black pastel. Just don’t see much in the pairing to support it. I’m sure in time it will reveal itself.

Really nice picture of momma when she was a little younger.

Last guess I have is that mom is black pastel, granite.
That would make the baby in question a (mojave, black pastel, granite.)

Update:
I contacted the breeder that I bought the male from to see what might be going on and was told that “Leopard” is what has caused the id confusion. The (Mojave, pied, 66% het hyp, pos yb) male was listed as a possible yellow belly because they were 90% sure about the yellow belly. They didn’t want to list the possible leopard because it wasn’t as identifiable in this animal. It was suspected but not enough to list as possible. Basically, they said it’s better to under promise and over deliver than the other way around. So we got lucky on this guy and the baby in question is (mojave, yellow belly, black pastel, leopard, 100% het pied.) …sending in a shed soon to see if the father is also het hypo. That’d be amazing.

I’m learning that without prior breeding information genetic identification can be quite the rabbit hole…:rabbit:
