Well , I have 3 more pips and it’s also palmetto plus one egg where is 100% palmetto didn’t pip yet . And in one egg there’s twins . For now I see only one baby . Also logilly thinking if there is more palmetto babies than expected means that Lakshmi’s genes won, so it’s logical to presume what I look at is not caramel but dull colors that will shed into same burgundy and gray with different colored dots from peach to yellow like Lakshmi has .
Egg on the left where is a baby has twins , un hutched egg above it is also palmetto baby Mansa , that mystery egg with funny story . She was most deflated when I found the clutch , she was barely holding so I separated her , she developed a window and mold around it , I fought it with Decasanum and won , she fell from my hand as I suddenly lost feeling in my thumb due to carpal tunnel syndrome flare up , I monitored her for 24 hours and prayed it didn’t bleed , it didn’t . The fall onto the soft dog bed cleanly the marked side up simply kickstarted her rapid growth instead . So whatever is emerging from the egg and candling shows it’s palmetto baby , is staying with me regardless of gender , I will keep a pair anyways , want to try and mix them with microscaleless later on and don’t want only Lakshmi to give birth every year because I don’t have enough snakes and no spare space to keep more .i mean like 20-30 adults . I have 11 snakes in total now , 5 adults and 6 yearlings .
I wouldn’t think of it as winning or losing genes. There are simply odds of things turning out one way or another. Each parent has two copies of a given gene, and one from each parent is given to the baby. If one parent (Lakshimi) has two copies of palmetto, making her visual palmetto, and Dad has one copy of palmetto (making him not visual, but instead het), then Lakshimi HAS to give a palmetto gene. It’s all she has for that particular genetic location. Dad can give either his palmetto allele or his normal allele. In your case, Dad, for whatever reason, gave his palmetto allele to the babies more often than his normal allele, which made the babies look palmetto. So you could more likely say, Dad’s palmetto allele won over his normal allele.
The caramel alleles will be their own genetic lottery because they are at a completely different location on the genetic code string (DNA). If mom gives her normal allele (even if dad gives caramel), the babies will look normal. If Dad gives his normal allele (even if mom gives her caramel), the babies will look normal. If mom AND dad both give their caramel allele for the same baby, though, the babies will be visually caramel. So you have 25% chance of getting a visual caramel. So roughly 1/4 of your palmettos should be caramel palmettos.
That said, Dad proved with his palmetto that “shoulds” and “odds” aren’t always reality. Sometimes parents give the genes we’re excited about more often, and sometimes they give the normal genes more often. So you’ll just have to wait and see what happens as your babies shed.
That’s not how genes work. Barring very rare events such as trisomy or parthenogenesis (neither of which appears to be the case here), each baby, every trait, every time has gets one allele from each parent. Odds of any particular trait or combination of traits can be calculated but these reflect only probablity. Actual distribution can vary and frequently does. Rare combos happen. Expected traits don’t appear. Unexpected ratios occur.
Having more than 50% Palmettos is great since they’re a target morph for you. But that has nothing to do with any other traits such as Caramel. There are traits which are linked and inherited and/or expressed together (i.e Pied and Diffused) but Palmetto does not have any such associations.
I’m not saying that the baby in question is absolutely Caramel. Can’t tell 100% from these images, though it does look that way to me. I’m just clarifying the Palmetto genetics “winning” as far as influencing other traits. It’s the old science teacher in me.

Thank you yes , if really all palmetto babies would be caramel then it would be strange but I will wait till they shed at least once to see their colors . I have 7 palmetto from 12 eggs so far and 4 eggs still didn’t hatch . One I’ve cut myself out of panic coz didn’t see movement , it’s that egg that had mold . Baby looked at me from inside the fluid as if I’m retarded today is day 70 so I think no damage is done that I’ve carefully cut one egg .
This one is clearly red . So others are caramel . Please don’t misunderstand me , I’m happy to see all the babies , even the normal baby . It’s just caramel is not my favorite color . And I didn’t expected Lakshmi to be het caramel .
Caramel Palmettos are maybe my favorite Palmettos. And it seems like their color bits are more golden-yellow than gold-brown. Or at any rate, brighter than you might be expecting.
And some more new babies . I think the one on the right is anery he have black dot . Also 3 more hatched , also palmetto and 2 more eggs still sitting unopened . In total I have 9 palmetto and 1 normal het palmetto from this clutch of palmetto x normal het palmetto . I think it’s not bad . Dean , I checked random pictures of caramel palmetto , maybe pictures of werent good or light was strange but some look not golden brown but khaki .
Please someone correct me if I’m wrong in this particular situation, but the big blotch is called paradoxing. It’s a genetic anomaly that isn’t predictable or reproducible, but I notice it pop up in many palmettos. It’s common enough, I’m not 100% sure it paradoxing, which is rare. It maybe something unique to palmettos. At any rate, if it is paradoxing, the blotch itself is an entirely different genetic code, working in one snake (here’s a MM article to see what I mean). So even if the blotch is red, the body can be caramel palmetto. Your others may very well develop some reds after their first shed, too, so don’t give up on the idea that you have more classic palmettos coming.
I have read it , I get what you mean about paradox . Let’s see him after few sheds . Would be very interesting to watch . He is the only one with that red splotch and I plan to keep that baby . I’m in Ukraine , everyone is excited about caramel , I’m more excited about anery , same color like Lakshmi , she have a large variety of colors on her and completely patternless corns . Yes , sure I plan to sell the babies .
it’s not Paradox unless it’s color that shouldn’t occur with the morph expressed. A big red blotch on an Anery Palmetto (or Anery anything) would be Paradox. For corns, it usually seems to be due to chimerism, where an individual may not be limited to one set of DNA.
Many Palmettos have large blotches of color. Some people really love blotchy ones, some don’t, but as @deanaii says it’s not indicative of Paradox unless the blotch is a color which the animal wouldn’t have. A normal Palmetto may very well have red, black, or brown in blotches. For whatever reason it seems that red and brown tones are more common in blotches that I’ve seen.
Some babies there’s one super tiny baby having black dots on is neck . He is in the middle picture , it’s from the moldy egg . 4 babies have shed already , 8 to go .
