Hello I need help identifying two of my leopard geckos that I adopted from pet smart they wouldn’t give me any info on what they could be.
Hi there and welcome. It’s possible that they wouldn’t give you that information because they didn’t have it. Geckos available for purchase from chain stores are often merely called “Leopard Gecko” for a normal, and “Fancy Leopard Gecko” for anything else. These animals are usually purchased wholesale and may or may not come with any information.
Without knowing what the parents were, it can be hard to tell. I’ll tag @armiyana for you, she may be able to offer you an ID.
@mystic_maddsss Actually I worked at Petsmart in animal care. When leopard geckos come in, their morphs are identified on the lid of their deli cups. The employees are supposed to fill out an identification/feeding chart/page in a binder for each gecko. Actually this information is supposed to be recorded for every animal that comes into the store.
What happens is, the containers are tossed in the trash and the information:morph is never recorded. The geckos are placed in the enclosures with the labels “Normal” or “Fancy”. Nobody that works there knows what is what so you may pay less for a more expensive one or more for a less expensive one.
I will tag @autumngeckos for you so you can get an id on each of them……
@caron I also worked as a lead in the Petsmart small animal department. Not every animal is IDed from the vendor and there are times even the vendors do not label them right. And then like your case, you have the employees who just don’t care and toss the info. Which is especially annoying when you get in the hand fed and papered birds.
You’re lucky your store decided to have a binder for the geckos. That’s wasn’t required unless you were really in trouble with the district manager for store loss. Only the snakes are required to have feeding charts per the SOP.
Edit: They do also occasionally sell the reptiles as a specific morph, but that is VERY rare. I’ve only seen it happen once with Leatherback beardies in 2011. Leopards are typically sold as “leopard gecko” or “leopard gecko, fancy”. So that is correct. =)
@mystic_maddsss Can you get a photo of your second gecko from the top? I feel like it’s a blizzard but I need to see the back of the neck and tail.
Your first is an albino. Looks like a high yellow to low grade ‘pet quality’ tangerine. I can’t tell you which line because they all look the same, but tremper is usually the most likely. Regardless, I do not recommend breeding them though.
@mystic_maddsss Also I would be very careful about keeping your geckos on sand unless you tong feed them or put the insects/dubias/worms, etc in an escape proof bowl. If your geckos ingest sand they will become impacted and that is life threatening for them.
If the binder is not filled out it’s not lucky. The binder remained empty besides what I put in it. But I was part time so animals came in when I was not working as well
I don’t feed them in that enclosure I feed them outside of it due to that reason I have quite a few lizards but just started getting into leopard geckos I currently have them also two snow Mack’s and I have a bearded dragon a black throat monitor and a Schneider skink
Okay, still looks more like blizzard to me, just what they would call ‘banana blizzard’ where they have more yellow than you usually see on these guys.
That what I was thinking because the yellow has gotten brighter since I got it I got him for free at petsmart due to him coming in and dropping his tail but it’s pretty much grown all the way back
The tail does look good for a regrown. And if the color already has been improving that’s always a good sign that they’re settling in with you and less stressed for sure.
Ok sounds good to me! Congratulations on the newbies btw!
