Milks vs Kings: Sell me on colubrids

It’s a possibility, I’d want to get keeper experience first and I’d rather not have to replace them with breeders or have a massive collection

I think I’m going to start with a candy cane corn snake- I’ve wanted one for so long that I have no doubt that they’ll be sticking around regardless of whether I choose to expand or not.

In the meantime, I’ll do more research on genetics while I gain keeping experience.
Even if I don’t end up doing anything with it, genetics are a special interest of mine and my neurodivergency won’t let me just leave a big glowing puzzle alone :joy:

Definitely still leaning towards picking up a pueblan or two (albinos are gorgeous, but I’m also partial to hypo, halloween, and oreo) and a black milk down the line, but I’m not in a hurry to be up to my neck in colubrids haha.

Thank you for the advice guys!

I love candy canes, too. They have such gorgeous color and contrast!

Word of note: be careful (if you’re getting a hatchling) that you watch for Miami lines with and without het cinder. A 100% het cinder will very often look like a true Miami line (which is the original locality where the white or grey background color came from), but will throw offspring without the het cinder and the babies will be full of background color. “True blue” amel Miami lines will have a clean white background no matter what. Outcrossed lines will have more color in the background like classics/normals.

Sometimes on the outcrossed lines, you can’t tell how much color will come in as the hatchling grows. If you get a Miami with 50% het cinder as a baby, for example, they can look great at first, but color up in the background much more than you expect with each shed. I got a baby that fit that description, thinking she’d stay white in the ground color, and she definitely has not. I’ve been bummed because I really was looking forward to that white ground color. She looks more and more like a regular butter than a Miami the older she gets. That said, I would say she’s likely the 50% that is NOT carrying het cinder. I still love her; of course, but she hasn’t turned out to be quite like I was expecting.
