Should I continue to offer the pinky head then so there is less change for them? Ill try changing the scent next so hopefully they eat after doing that so assist feeding isnt needed.
That’s the way I personally would proceed. Others may have different thoughts, having had distant experiences. There really isn’t hard and fast sequence which will work every time. These tiny creatures hatch with their own individual personalities and preferences. It’s a matter of figuring out what will work for each little individual.
I’m not a corn snake person, but @noodlehaus noted on one of their ongoing threads that sometimes having a good eater paired with a slow feeder can encourage the slow eater, possibly through visual/paired learning?
I’m not sure if this would work for your two, or if it would even be suggested in this case, so maybe some of the more experienced corn keepers can hop in on that, but it could be another thing to try.
This is still a working theory that needs more testing. I’m hoping that with more time and observation, it will prove to be a viable option. During the feeding attempt I usually observe the entire time, just to be sure there’s no accidental cannibalism. As this is @shadowspiderjack’s first clutch and one sibling is half the size of the other, I’m not comfortable suggesting this be attempted in this particular case.
Awesome, thanks for the more experienced take on the matter. Just happened to see your technique and wasn’t sure if OP had seen that thread so I wanted to spit it out there
id say that pebbles is more than double bambams size now since they have been eating.
I suspected this, which would make it even more inadvisable. Ups the chance of injury to BamBam. He’ll get there, takes patience sometimes.
if bambam continues not to eat is there a likely chance they will eat after their second shed? Also after using dish soap on the pinky should I still boil it?
I’m personally not sure, best wait for someone else to address that one. Usually shedding happens due to growth, so not eating means more time between shed cycles. As for the dish soap, always try one thing at a time, then if those don’t work, combine later. That way you know what works and don’t have to guess which change got them eating.
Definitely agree with @noodlehaus on this. Just try the soap first and if no luck then boil next time. Just curious. When was his hatch date?
Bambam hatched on 27th June and pebbles was the 28th so they are both a little over a month old.
Ok I could not remember. I am just so hoping the little guy eats soon. Some go way longer than a month but it’s his size that concerns me. I’m not trying to dampen your spirits in any way though! I am sure you will find the right “flavor” that he is patiently waiting for! You have a lot of people cheering for you and him!
Offering them both food now. Keeping pebbles the same as usual pinky thawed from tap then boiled and bambam has a pinky thawed from the tap and covered in dish soap for the scent.
I assume by covered you mean you put it on and rinsed it off?
Yeah thats what i meant to say lol i didnt explain that very well sorry.
It’s totally okay, was just double-checking to make sure! Hopefully this is the trick that gets BamBam eating.
Come on, Bambam, you can do it! Cheering for Pebbles too, of course. I hope that this will be thething.
Unfortunately bambam hasnt eaten still but pebbles has taken 3 pinkies in a row now! Also after checking if bambam has eaten it looks like ive found a very tiny poop so maybe they were still absorbing some yolk?
Edit: Just checked up on bambam again and they still havent eaten. But despite being much smaller than their sibling they are much more active yet wont eat. This one sure is being a pain.
Hooray for Pebbles! Sounds like this one is past the “problem child” phase. That’s terrific!
Dang it, I was really hoping Bambam would eat. You’ve got a challenging baby, to be sure. It’s good that the little one seems active. Passing waste is s good thing, too. The continued refusal of food is beginning to get concerning, though.
Have you got a way to “wiggle” the prey item? Sometimes they’re triggered by motion to grab the food. If you’ve got some narrow tweezers or hemostats, you might try that. If you do, try to position your body so that your baby won’t think you’re looming over him. For me, sitting on a step stool with the snake at about eye level on a table works well.
I do have some tongs I can use but since they can only eat pinky heads it can be quite hard to grip with the tongs. Im still hopeful they eat throughout the night. If they don’t what would be best to try next?
