My Struggles With Tags

Using tags for organization has been difficult for me to interact with. When creating a post you can click in the tags box but you are only shown the top 5 tags forum wide. If you start typing it does search but in many cases I haven’t found the appropriate tag to use despite one being available.

On top of that, in the category view, the description of the category ends with "organized with tags “xxxx”,“xxxx”, “xxxx”, and “more…” but I havent found a way to view all of the tags for a category.

I am having the same problem. Seems I can not create a tag myself? @Jlhingle ?

Ok, when you hit optional tags, it gives you the opportunity to create tags…see my photo. Now, there are some restrictions on what you can do until you have reached a certain level, and I’m guessing that is what is going on here.

Much likely, because with me it shows the search option only.

You guys are free to message me and I will do my best to get your tags added

I think the create tags option is only available to admins and maybe moderators depending on the forum settings. I just want to bring attention to what could be a user experience issue for you guys. Right now when someone posts, tags are completely optional so if one isn’t found then your average user will be less inclined to try to use the feature in the future.

Depending on your “Trust Level” as a member your ability to do things on the forum will differ so to know more about tags and trust levels please read those.

Here is our current list of tags https://morphmarket.discoursehosting.net/tags and of course if you make a new thread and the tag is not available the staff will create it for you.

Hi guys, great find. You are totally right about not being able to create tags and wasn’t aware of this, but I have now fixed it. The default for create tag was TL3 and I have lowered it to TL2 – which I think is the obvious choice at least until we have a strong population of tags.

On top of that, in the category view, the description of the category ends with "organized with tags “xxxx”,“xxxx”, “xxxx”, and “more…” but I havent found a way to view all of the tags for a category.

Right now all tags should be legal for all categories. There are some fancier things you can do with allowing certain tags only in certain cats and while I wanted to use this it didn’t seem appropriate.

I think this addresses most of the concerns raised above except perhaps:

If you start typing it does search but in many cases I haven’t found the appropriate tag to use despite one being available.

That’s something we can keep an eye on. I find it best to type a few chars and give it a moment to filter, and haven’t had probs with that.

I think that last one has to do with how I think more than anything. I don’t think ‘photos’ I think ‘pictures’, stuff like that. knowing that I can find the tag list at https://morphmarket.discoursehosting.net/tags is a huge help.

@critterscreatures said elsewhere:

[the site still] feels unstructured. When I look at the front page I see a list of topics that have been added/updated but it is difficult for me to pick out which posts would be relevant to my interests. I end up reading them all, which may not be a bad thing.

I think you have two options here.

As mentioned in this thread, at this point you can begin to curate the list of tags that are interesting to you. In particular, you can use negative tags to filter OUT certain topics you never want to seeing your “latest” view. Negative tags didn’t work quite right but I have worked with the authors of this software who fixed it. To do so, visit a tag page and hit the “circle button” and change to “Muted”.

If you want to view topics “the old way”, you can click on “Categories” link at the top, and go in and out of each area.
