And the Saga of Franklin comes to a happy end!
I found a lovely natural treefall with both horizontal logs and living trees in it, since I wasn’t sure if he was ready for brumation or if he still wanted up in the trees.
We sat in the sun together for a bit after he left the jar on his own, and then I moved away to let him feel more comfortable. After 15 more minutes or so in the sun, he hopped down into the leaf litter under the logs.
I miss him already, I absolutely need a sticky frog companion in my future
Well you made the right decision for him! I think he will be the happiest in the environment he came from. You did good!
Thank you!! I was sad to see him go but once I can own a frog I’ll get a nice CBB friend
The saga of Franklin the Fortunate Foundling Frog made me really happy! He went from a dangerous and potentially lethal situation as a “hopping rock” in a parking lot to a lovely, froggy wild haven. Nicely done, @cmills !
Aww, yay, so glad you gave Franklin such a good shot at survival. And you definitely made the right call. He belongs in the wild. He can handle it. Just look at that face, he’s a total badass!
You totally need a CBB amphibian friend! Most frogs don’t take up much space. And they tend to be inoffensive to neighbours and landlords (unlike snakes, lizards, and spiders).
Holy cow Tom! Incredible photography!
When I picked him up and walked into my apartment building I could hear my mom’s voice in my head going ‘Oh lord what do you have NOW’
One day!!! I love all tree frogs, especially milk frogs and dumpy frogs!
Oh gee, does that ever bring back memories!!! Heard it from my husband, too, in later years. Guess some things don’t change.
That’s where selective hearing comes in handy!
Very cool photos!! I see raptors around here, but I never get pics.
These little dudes…the one on the left looks like he’s trying to intimidate the one on the right. The photo didn’t capture the bright red that he displayed when he was inaction. Bad quality photo. In Orlando.
Not exactly a reptile…or in the wild…but
I had a science stinkbug join me today for my slide imaging - considering I work in a basement, this sure beats a science roach!
Yes I ABSOLUTELY tried to look at him under the scope and see what he would look like in micro, but little fella did NOT want to be a scientist and would not stop stomping around - so instead he just helped me look at my slides
Shoo wee! Those things really do stink! I remember them from my childhood summers!
I remember them, too. Not the best scent I ever encountered lol. But oh my goodness, @cmills, your little stinkbug vignette had me grinning all over my face!
What’s so crazy is I can’t smell stinkbugs! So I love them because I get all the goofy little fellow and none of the smell - I CAN smell fireflies though which is unusual. I know of people who can smell ants!
Bug smells seem to confuse the human snoot
Weird! We don’t have stinkbugs where I live, so I don’t know if I can smell them. We do have something we call a stinkbug, but it’s actually a darkling beetle. I assume people call them “stink bugs” because they stick their butts in the air as a defensive display. I’ve never detected a strong odor from them.
I find that ladybugs smell really bad to me. Anyone else, or am I a freak?
PS your lab assistant is adorable.
I can smell fireflies, too. And ants. Stinkbugs don’t stink to me when they’re just stomping around, though when they decide to do their stink-bomb tactics they surely do!
Ok Missy! The next time you see what you are sure is a stink bug, just step on it. Then see if you can smell it!
If the experiment didn’t require obliterating a little cutie I totally would! I’ll just…wait to sniff any I find smooshed…hmmmm maybe that won’t help me make friends
