I am looking for some good resources on breeding hognose snakes. I don’t want to ask here and have all you nice folks tell me what I need to know, I want to do the work myself. I just want to make sure the stuff I am looking at is reputable and accurate. My female is weighing in at 210g and my male is coming in at 50g so from what I have read online it’s almost show time lol. Books, websites, youtube channels, pretty much any info is welcomed. I’ll trust what I am reading a lot more if it is recommended to me by someone from this forum. Thanks!
This goes over breeding stuff as well as general care on hognoses, I’ll have to see if I can find any good YouTube videos as I can’t think of any in particular off the top of my head — although the part about a “ovulatory shed cycle” is a bit weird cuz my one female I’ve bred has never had such a shed cycle, only a prelay shed… so I just start pairing as soon as they have had a meal or two after being brought up from brumation.
My best advice would be to find a breeder who’s morals align with yours, who’s willing to mentor you. You can learn so much from one’s experiences and mistakes so that you don’t have to do the same
Is that something I would be able to make a forum post about? I don’t know if that’s something that would be allowed here. Hogs are not very big in my area. A lot of people know about them, but not a lot of people are breeding them. I don’t think I would be able to find someone local.
Someone local isn’t necessary, my mentor was in Indiana (I’m in Vancouver, BC). It was a lot of phone calls, troubleshooting via text, Facebook messenger. It’s not one size (scent) fits all with them, but having someone with experience to call on can alleviate a ton of stress when you get your first clutch and you’re like “crap, how do I get them to take their first meal?”
