They’re continuing to move, that’s a good thing. Does she actively swim when she’s in the water? Some enjoy swimming, some don’t. And of course, being uncomfortable, she may be hesitatant. As long as she doesn’t get too agitated, it’s fine to encourage her to swim/move more by shifting around her “dock.”
She started off swimming well. If we give her some “current” by swirling the water around the tub, she usually likes to swim against it. Lately, though, she just wants to cling to her rock anchor or the drain plug and try to see how far she can reach to get herself out. I think she’s sick of the baths! Poor thing. She has to be so uncomfortable.
Sorry if this is a redundant question but you have a reptile vet right?
Yes. He has cared for several of my reptiles and I’ve been pleased with him, but he did confess he doesn’t have a ton of experience with breeder corn snakes. He said he has a very experienced friend out of state who he can ask questions to if needed. Edited to add: I actually liked him more for his willingness to admit his weak areas and his diligence in finding the answers to things he was unfamiliar with. I feel like those are generally the best docs.
Have you reached out to him to let him know what is going on and maybe send him a picture of her in your latest post? I am in no way trying to send you to the vet but I thought maybe he could ease your mind a bit.
All of us here care about those in situations like yours but we would NEVER judge you or anyone else with decisions that you have to make. I know you are beside yourself so I just thought you might be able to find some solace in the advice of your vet and/or his friend……
Oh yes I totally agree!
He doesn’t work Thursdays or Fridays, when I absolutely would have brought her in, again. I called all his referral docs with no luck or openings. So yes, I’m trying as hard as I can to not bite my nails until Monday. Hopefully I can just schedule a phone call or something with him so I don’t have to stress her by bringing her in again.
Well I know exactly what you’re going through. I am hoping for the very best for you and if you had to explain what you had already posted I do apologize. But I really think things will work out and she will be fine!
No, your questions are fine. Therapeutic, actually! It’s nice to have an excuse to talk more about her with people who get why I care so much. There are very few people out there who do!
Amen! When you even say the word “snake” most people look at you like you’re evil! All snakes have their rightful place in creation and are as deserving as any animal of respect, proper care, consideration and compassion. You surely came to the right place!
So true! Except no one who knows me well gets off easy on that assumption! Haha.
I’m a very religious/spiritual soul, so I usually admit to them that I had the same reservations when my son got us into them. But because I love studying multiple religions, I tell them my curiosity sparked a deep dive into the religious symbolism of snakes.
I was fascinated to see the many examples of POSITIVE symbolism across many cultures—symbols of rejuvenation, creation, and power. Egyptians as well as Christians, I realized, have dual symbolism—some snakes that represent “evil,” AND other snakes that are representative of “good always being STRONGER than evil,” or “healing/rejuvenation.” In fact, when I counted every single reference to the word “serpent,” in the Bible, for each reference where the serpent was designated as Satan/evil, there were nearly DOUBLE the number that referred to Christ/Jehovah/goodness.
I even found an article written by a professor from a private Christian University say that the original serpent symbol represented Christ, and because of that, Eve was more easily deceived when Satan took over the symbol and corrupted it for his own purposes. I thought that was super interesting.
So now, if anyone begins by giving me the “snakes are evil” line, I show them everything I’ve learned and they usually leave saying, “Wow! Snakes are cooler than I thought!” I’ve even talked a few into letting their kids get one! Haha.
Thanks for letting me carry on! It’s more fun to talk about why I love snakes so much than worry about Confetti!
You are preaching to the choir honey! The symbol of a snake is represented on the white coats that physicians wore back in the day! Eve was deceived by Satan himself, only in the guise of a serpent, not by the serpent himself. Eve didn’t seem surprised the serpent could talk either, which leads me to believe all the animals could speak in the garden of Eden.
Ok, we had better leave it here!
It’s a great choir to be in
I love that idea. Great reasoning—if you pick up one end of the stick, you pick up the other!
That is a great thing to learn to do. Wish I’d had someone coach me on that previously. I was instead raised working on farms, where animals were literally given a bullet to the head when it was their time!
I appreciate the supportive atmosphere of this group so much, without criticism on whether we decide yes or no for surgery.
The absolute worst part is that I have to manage my girl from afar due to a work trip (another reason I really hope my vet can do a call). My daughter is doing the daily swim and feedings, bless her! It took some major work to come to peace with leaving Confetti in her condition…but I’m so antsy, I convinced myself it was better because my daughter was more able to give her needed care without checking on her a thousand times like I do. I am way too tempted to mess with her more than is likely good for her. I’m just really, really hoping she stays stable until I get back and can tend to her with 100% focus. This trip is the worst timing
Oh gosh, I feel that anxiety! Last season, one of my females decided to have trouble while I was away. Poor Dan was a nervous wreck. He did eventually have to take her in, and the vet was fortunately able to get the two “stuck” eggs out without surgery. It was stressful for everybody but it had a happy ending. I am sure your daughter will keep you in the loop. Who knows? Perhaps as you say, it will be good for Confetti to be under different eyes for a time.
Your daughter is awesome!
