Sudden death in crested geckos?

I really wish that I could do a necropsy. If I have any more pass (I really hope to god I don’t) it’s top of my priority list - just had no way to preserve them this time.

I made sure they were well hydrated before I left, they had access to the bowls and to spraying, and neither dead gecko looked to be at all dehydrated. No wrinkles or wavy tail, no shrink wrapping on the head or limbs - they looked completely normal.

I am in the process of moving everyone off of the eco earth just in case that is the cause. I haven’t wanted to do paper towels because I really like giving my animals a more natural environment, but I don’t want to risk that they might be eating it and dying.

I will check each enclosure meticulously for spiders, and the enclosures for my living animals as well.

Add images but blur them and put a warning.

Wouldn’t think this is the issue at all.

All mine are bio, even hatchlings go into bio same day they hatch and never an issue there.

It likely wasn’t the substrate since they would’ve shown signs of being impacted, but paper towels are probably best for now so you can monitor them better. If you want to use a more natural substrate in the future but you don’t want to go back to eco earth, you could do something like peat moss?

As said above, you can not the pictures (not sure how though) and put a warning on do no one has to look unless they want too!

Might make you feel a little better if other see :woman_shrugging:

Glad you got the enclosure away from the others :+1:

And I really hope you don’t loose another :crossed_fingers:

As for the spiders… False widows are supposed to be rare here in UK.

But they are everywhere! I see them more than any other species of spiders :disappointed:

I did go back and try to upload those pictures, and unfortunately I don’t have access to them anymore. I lost my power in those Midwest storms last week and I think something about when that happened messed up my normal syncing, so I can’t locate the pictures of the geckos anywhere even though I know I took them. If I find them, I’ll post them.

Luckily everyone made it through those power outages fine, albeit grumpy that they were put in delis and transported down to the basement where it was only 75 degrees instead of 85.

How were your enclosures heated? Is the room where these are housed 85* or is that just the hotspot in the enclosures?

No, my enclosures are kept at room temperature and that’s normally about 74 degrees, but because my power went out I had no A/C. So I had to move all of the geckos into delis and into the basement, because the upstairs ambient temperature was 85-86.
