Updates about getting a Crested Gecko!

Hey guys! Hope yall are doing well  .

A couple months ago, I moved from Texas up to New York, and we’re finally buying a house! In the case of reptiles, this means a new terrarium for Mochi, a crestie enclosure then start looking for a crestie! I know a lot of people get reptiles and then they get bored of them or cant take care of them, which works better because im pretty sure most people get rid of them when theyre grown and I personally dont like very small reptiles, so my plan is to adopt an adult crested gecko. The geckos in a safe home, I have a fairly larger lizard, everyones happy ! Anyone know some places I can adopt a crested gecko from? Thank you! ^^

The only thing I can suggest to you is to maybe look around MorphMarket to see if there are “Pet Only” listings and filter what maturity you’d prefer.

I know there are a few breeders out there that retire their Adult breeding animals to live as pets for the rest of their lives. You may have luck there

Also, from TX to NY is quite the travel! Good luck out there.

Check with your local pet shops. Even the big box ones. The employees may know a reptile rescue in the area or a reptile specialist for vet care.

I know some box shops have their own protocol for adoptions if they have animals that can’t be sold for some reason or another. That can include something as simple as a dropped tail or just an older animal that’s less likely to sell.

Yup, can confirm this. I had a housemate who was a vet tech for the vet our local Petco used for their animals, and she became friendly with the animal manager at that store. The animal manager would let us know when they had an animal they couldn’t sell and we’d come get it. We ended up with a chameleon who was initially thought to be blind in one eye (turned out it was just stuck shed, cham was actually totally fine with two functioning eyes), a chinchilla that was returned for biting someone, and a beardie with missing toes.

So yeah, definitely worth checking with local pet shops.

Reptile vets usually work with reptiles rescues, or at least mine does. That might be another avenue to try….

I got a chinchilla when I was working at PetSmart because he was super stressed and would start bloating constantly. 2 weeks later he was fine and he’s been here since.

Yeah, chins are pretty prone to stress, so I can definitely see how some would struggle to cope with a pet shop environment. Glad he’s getting some peace with you. I miss my girl, she passed away last year.

@snakieverdi You might even check with your local animal shelter or humane society. Most take in reptiles when needed, and since cresties are one of the more popular reptile species to keep, there’s always a chance one could turn up there.
