What do you guys do with sheddings? cool idea below

Last night my baron racer shed for the first time since owning her,the face part of the shed looked so good that I tried stretching it so it could dry with the best shape possible but once it did it looked all wrnikly and overall like shite so without previous attempts or knowledge I thought why not mounting it over a clay model like people do with dry mount taxidermy? so I took some Das modelling clay and started trying to replicate the shape of the head while I soaked the shed so it would be soft again, when I mounted the shed both shed and clay were still fresh and it was a little tricky playing with the right amount of humidity to do it correctly. Now I don’t have lots of experience modelling clay either but I think that giving its my first attempt ,it looks really cool and maybe with practice I could get more realistic results.
Have you ever tried something like this? would you try it?

That is such a cool idea :open_mouth:

It would be a great thing to sell to customers who do not have the funds to experience having reptiles as pets but still want to have something resembling one! I’d definitely practice with this a little more if I were you.

That is so cool!! I’m tempted to try this next time I get a really nice head shed from one of my legless kids.

Only thing I’ve done with sheds is make them into pendants for necklaces.

I love the blue one! I want to do something like that with the tip of the tail of my BR (fell while shedding)

I also wanted to add a tip: with a pen or pencil softly tuck the lips in and make the inside of the mouth slightly hollow so you have better results. Lower jaw might needto be done separatedly and for the neck and body you might want to cut the shed on one side to wrap the clay.

So cool! I have attempted the same type of thing but with wooden models. I use .3mm fine line felts for color. Attempted, with no where near as good of a result. I have a baby wooden milk snake I have been fussing with for a while.
I also make a yearly parcel of all my sheds and send them to an artist in the Yukon territory. She makes pictures with them. Flowers, trees, birds, fish. Very detailed work. She tells me one piece can have ten or more skins and take a couple months to complete. Sadly, I don’t have any pics or a piece of my own.

I always seem to fat finger it but I have a baby rattler skin for my next attempt

Thanks! I gave the blue one to my mom for her birthday. It’s a very “me” gift to give (both because it’s reptile-related, and because I’ve messed around with making jewelry since I was a kid). :joy:

They’re super easy to make. I ordered the metal frames with the glass coverings off Amazon. Then I just cut a piece of coloured foil paper and a piece of shed to size and secure everything together with a few spots of clear craft glue.
