Wanting to start a breeding project that I can involve the family with. Learning experience for the teens, but I’ve only got experience with Leopard geckos and Balls. I don’t want to breed something that’s not necessarily “wanted”. NOT looking to make $, just want to restart an old hobby now that my sons are teens and old enough to be involved.
I love royals and king snakes, but the dune and cave geckos seem interesting also. And some of the garters that I’ve seen are gorgeous. But this hobby has come so far since I was last in it. I just don’t want to breed something that’s not necessary or needed. So the question is, what would be some great options to look into? What’s not overly saturated? What’s new and/or in demand?
So you’re going to get some mixed answers for your question ![]()
Heres my answer to your question:
If you are going to do a breeding project involving the family as well, listen to your sons input, find out what they may be interested in. Figure out what everyone can agree on that will be enjoyable to breed, don’t focus on whats “on demand” because the demand is always changing and it may change for something your family may or may not enjoy.
My main focus is Colubrids and Ball Pythons, some say the BP market is oversaturated and that BPs don’t sell well because of it, I’ve had a fairly decent time selling them myself but I’m just counting myself lucky on that. The Kingsnakes I bred actually took much longer to sell than any BP I’ve ever produced.
I do Kingsnakes and Ball Pythons because I find it enjoyable, I used to breed Crested Geckos but I fell out of it because I didn’t enjoy them as much as I did the snakes. I prefer not working on breeding Cresties anymore although they sold well because I don’t want to be working on projects I don’t have interest in since in the long run it effects the animals because I lose the energy and motive to continue the projects. I do have one as pet-only though ![]()
Thats my take on it anyway.
