I’m a little bummed tonight. He weighed 20g. 3g lighter than the last time. He’s acting normal though. Maybe it’s because he’s on day 4 without eating. I really don’t want to have to buy another batch of pinkies because he’s not at the guided 24g for the next size up.
It’s a bit like Barbosa said, “They’re more like what you call guidelines.” The weights are flexible to some degree. They’re certainly not set in stone.
I’m confused. If he’s losing weight, it’s worrisome. But - are you consistently weighing him “empty?” What do you mean that he’s “on day 4 without eating” in this?
Usually I weight 48hrs after eating. This time I weighed him 96hrs later. I just fed him my last two pinkes so I’m thinking next time I’ll try one small fuzzy
Your most accurate, empty weight will be just before eating again. But they can still be holding poop then too.
Yes! They could be “full of it” or “full of ####”!
Yep. Sometimes poop happens, sometimes poop happens twice, lol.
Fuzzies can vary widely in weight. If you’re snake is over 20 g, find the smallest one in the package. Check the weight. If it’s 3-4 g it should be okay, especially if you cut into the prey. It’s not simply about weight when they up to fuzzies. They’re also having to deal with fur, which affects the way the food passes through. You may see an odd poop or or two initially, if the snake has any trouble digesting its meal completely.
I usually give them an extra day or two between the first couple meals when they move up in prey size. Probably not strictly necessary, but some handle the transition more easily than others.
Good luck!
I’m probably over thinking again but I guess it shows my dedication.
The Nutribac won’t be here until Sunday and that will be day 7 without food so I plan on feeding the smallest fuzzy I have that day. Problem is he’s due for shed any day now. He’s not showing signs but here’s the dates he has shed 6/11, 7/16, 8/30. I think his shed is right around the corner. Is it a bad idea to make the switch to a fuzzy when he’s about to shed?
I’d wait for the shed before bumping prey size.
Me too. If his skin is feeling snug to him, there’s a higher chance of a regurge, especially with a larger meal. I had one who would accept a meal if I missed the early signs of an oncoming shed and fed him, then regurge. Best to wait if you think he is due a shed.
Alright I just finished shedding and now about to bump him up to the next prey size of a Small Fuzzy. How long do you suggest thawing the fuzzy? The pinkies were super quick in cold water. Thinking with the fuzzy thaw in cold water for an hour then let it sit for a few minutes in warm water.
Just put it directly from frozen into hot water. Once the water cools a bit, dump it out and put it in some fresh hot water.
Looks good. You can expect a growth spurt now that the snake is taking fuzzies.
