Where to get retired (pet only) female?

I have a 3’x1’ terrarium that a crestie would love, and I don’t want to deal with breeding behavior from a male (my friend has one that has attempted to make love to my hands on too many occasions). I need an older crestie that can spend its last few years in my care because in the foreseeable future I just won’t have time to give a younger one the attention she’d need. I’ve been searching for potential rescues and morphmarket listings but none really fit my bill, so I’m coming here to ask and maybe get some answers!

If you have a reputable reptile shop near you some will take a number down to keep you in mind if you’re a regular there. Or if they know of a rescue you can contact since they probably have people coming in to leave #s for that too.

Otherwise you can check ‘local’ on the sales side of morphmarket. If a breeder has contact info listed you can always drop and introduction an just let them know you would be interested in a retired breeder if they have them available.

If a breeder you contact gives you a poor response, then that is definitely someone you would want to avoid regardless. A good breeder wouldn’t have an issue with an honest question and reason like this.

I think most breeders who have retired breeders tend to move them at reptile shows or with friends and family. I do tend to notice most posted ads go for younger animals or still active breeders.

Agreed with Armiyana, though one thing to note is that their behaviour isn’t really tied to their sex - My sweetest crestie is a retired breeder male, whereas one of my craziest ones is a female. Also, they don’t really need a ton of attention regardless of age, so maybe you could extend your search to other pet-only geckos as well, if you just want one that is gonna chill for the rest of their life? Since cresties are still relatively new in the hobby, not many have gotten to the point of retirement just yet. There are geckos out there with polydactylism, slight MBD, or other issues that just aren’t fit for breeding, that im sure would love to live in a nice big tank without having to breed
