I live in Wisconsin first corn snake 2 months old is 65 f too cold for cool side heat pad set at 86

65 is absolutely too cold for a cool side temp. Is a heat mat your only form of heating? I know some folks will say just having the mat is fine, but personally I find they do better if they’re able to have warmer air temps as well.

okay now im wondering if i should space his feedings, we’ve been doing 1 pink around 1-3g gradually increasing every 5 days since he started eating.

Weighed him yesterday before his meal and he’s at 15.5g! Still new to babies and he’s approximately 3mo old today. Would this be an unhealthy weight gain these last 2 or so months or should i keep on the 5day schedule? Would moving him to every 6 days be healthier? I dont want to fatten him toooooo quickly  i know it can be bad for their health long term. But i figure he’s still a growing baby and this is good right?

I have my baby corn on both a heat mat and a CHE - both of these are on thermostats to make sure its not too hot or burning him

It definitely wouldn’t hurt to have. That way you have two heat sources, and if one fails you’ve still got a second.

One thing I’ve learned about heat mats is that they really only work as a sole heat source if your enclosure is in a room that stays fairly warm (70F+). If your home/snake room routinely gets cooler than that, an overhead heat source is really helpful for increasing ambient temps.

Granted, I keep species that come from much warmer parts of the world than corns.

Very glad that your snake is eating so well after his initial reluctance. Yes, you should slow down on the feedings. At 16 g he’s fine to feed weekly. Feeding every 5 days or even 6 is a bit of a rush on his body. In nature it’s very highly unlikely that he’s be catching a meal every 5 or 6 days, and his body isn’t really adapted for that rate of food intake.
