I’m currently about to be able to start getting my 40 breeder set up for my first snake, and I need help on what species to choose! I’m going to have it be bioactive, so there’s a little less room for flexibility compared to if I was using aspen or coco husk.
The current species I’m looking at are:
Bantam cornsnakes
Bamboo ratsnakes
MALE African house snakes
And hognose snakes.
I love them all, but I just can’t pick one out that I’m set on and building the enclosure around that animal’s needs.
Bantam corns are all the morph and personality appeal of a full size corn but smaller, bamboo rats are an amazing oddball species, house snakes are very pretty and quite easy to handle, and hognoses are adorable and pretty with all their morphs…
My vote is a Bantam corn snake of course! But I admit I am a little bit prejudiced! . My Cheddar Bay Biscuit is a little sweetie pie! He’s a great eater and very easy to keep. Your tank would be perfect for one. Also Bantams are not that common so you would have something not everyone has. Bantams may be a bit pricey but trust me they are worth Every Penny! Of course hoggies are great too so it would be hard to choose between the two. Of course you could solve that problem! Just get both, and another tank of course!
I just love the sheer chubbiness of the bantams! They look like little corndogs, especially with the little tail looking like the stick! Even though I love both another tank is currently off the table due to lack of room though, plus I already have a decent amount of tanks already (one six gallon fishtank, one ten gallon fishtank, one sixty gallon cube, one twenty long, and the aformentioned 40 breeder.) The reason why I wasn’t able to set it up is because it was being used as a brooder for ducklings!
Think I’m pretty set on the bantam corns, got to love the odd NJ laws on corns though (Snake must be amel, butter, blizzard, candy cane, creamsicle, lavender, pearl, snow, or sunglow. Either that or have a morph from this list in a morph combo, you must have all documentation of sale, and the parentage must be documented and not wild caught.) this is due to them being state endangered animals, but it’s worth having the morph limitations though, instead of having them banned fully!
Quite the large amount of hoops for a little snake yet you can own a full grown SNAPPING TURTLE without any permits… Got to love NJ’s somewhat concerning logic.
I will always recommend a housie! No shade on corns, which are fantastic snakes on their own merits, of course. My housies, though, are great hanging-out companions; if you get a pretty chill one, you can carry them around with you in your sleeve or on your hand or in a hoodie and they just seem to enjoy chilling.
