Hello everyone,
As the title says I’m looking for some pointers on where to start when looking to trade some crested geckos. I don’t want to sell any of my current geckos and would prefer to trade. I emailed MorphMarket to ask if I could post $0 “trade only” listings (I would cover shipping) and they replied saying that wasn’t an option. Any advice and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
It’s against TOS for us to really recommend other sites afaik.
I would still post them on MorphMarket. But you would need to list the price and explain that the price is for an animal of that approximate value in trade.
Trades are allowed, but you cannot list them as 0$.
I would put a ‘trade only’ in the title and the explanation in the description as well so that it is painstakingly obvious it is not a sale.
The downside is though that you would still need to be careful as obviously it is easy to scam regardless of where you do the trading. Especially when dealing with a long distance trade. MM does what it can, but obviously there’s always a risk when you’re trusting someone to send an animal when you already sent theirs.
Realistically you’re not likely to be successful by advertising, and you’re putting yourself at high risk of being scammed. Most trades in the reptile industry are amongst people who already know each other and have built a personal relationship with a lot of trust. Your best bet is to talk to other Crestie folks and do your best to make friends. Then down the line, you can see if they’d be up for a trade. You’re also more likely to have luck locally, talking with people face to face.
As @armiyana said, you can try your hand at advertising on the Marketplace, but that’s going to be hit or miss. There’s actually a search option to look specifically for animals where the seller lists trades accepted, though this is not a guarantee they will be willing to trade, especially if you are newer/unknown. This is that search, the box itself is under “other options” on the sidebar:
I see, thank you anyways for the advice! I was aware that it was a secondary method for a seller to accept aside from their asking price but didn’t think that it could act as just a listed value in this case. I didn’t want to unintentionally break any rules or appear misleading by posting trades on MM so this clears that up.
