I have my 4 month old ball python currently in a 4x2x2 Zen Habitat enclosure. He loves exploring and climbing and uses every inch of the space. The problem is that he figured out he’s small enough that he could wedge him self out between the sliding acrylic doors and escape. Fortunately for me, he got tired and only made it about 12’ and into a nearly empty closet. However, this has made me now nervous to leave him in there. I was looking at the Apex Enclosures and love the modular in all directions concept. That I can add and take away multiple sizes in all 3 directions. And even connect around a corner. My only concern is that the doors are not glass. And while the latches and lock look solid, could he potentially bend and push out an area big enough to escape? I couldn’t find much online about this specific brand so thought I’d ask here. TIA. Photo of the naughty boy who was not remorseful in the least. And how he has permanently bowed my enclosure doors.
So a bit of a disclaimer here… there is a policy about no reviews, unboxings or promotions. This isn’t quite the same, but just throwing this out in case someone does try to make this one. I will say the obligatory MorphMarket does stand by Dubia as they’re the same ownership.
Enclosures with the latching doors are generally pretty solid when well designed.
They’re designed to basically lay flat in a groove or over the front. Typically there’s not space for a little one to get through…
Apex does have a pretty nice looking design that I was eyeballing myself. The modular building is really a neat feature. I also appreciate anything I can potentially get some neat colors in… Like my dumb blue and purple aluminum sided 4x2s. Lol.
There is another issue that may still pop up though… Heat and humidity can warp acrylic. So that could be an issue with the doors on other enclosures.
I had an issue with too much humidity in my incubator and the acrylic started to warp the doors enough that I needed a latch to keep it closed.
I don’t know if that’s potentially why the acrylic for yours may be a bit bowed. It strikes me as odd that a small little noodle can leave that much force and pressure. Maybe make sure the enclosure isn’t warped along some edge or if the top has stuff on it or another enclosure make sure it’s not too heavy on top and making too much pressure?
How old is the enclosure? As @armiyana said, if there is something sitting on top of it, say something fairly heavy, the doors could be bowed a slight bit to begin with. After a few years of use I noticed the one ones I had (pvc) were starting to bow in the middle. But the doors opened out.
I’m also curious about the tape I see on the left in the bottom picture? Maybe I’m just not understanding the picture. I am really surprised that such a young BP is all over the enclosure. Usually babies like that are afraid to come out of their hiding places in large enclosures. This little critter was certainly scouting around for a way out.
If you do buy a different brand I suggest that you check out the ones with the doors that open out instead of the sliding doors. I believe there would be less chance of even a smaller snake like your little tyke escaping. He’s a pretty little thing btw!
