Apartment Frog/Toad Suggestions

I had a “secret” beardie in my first apartment. The landlord did eventually find out about him, but didn’t care. Even though there technically weren’t any pets allowed, he only really cared about free-roaming pets as it turned out.

I figure as long as my little friend is quiet, unobtrusive, and non-damaging, they probably won’t notice nor care.

I feel a little nervous about ‘breaking the rules’ - but a quarter sized baby pacman is a very small friend, which means it would be a very small broken rule :joy: Not really but that’s my justification.

I’ve had 4 semi-annual inspections now (fire alarm checks and AC filters), and no one has questioned my isopod bin labeled ‘compost’ sooooo

Hi! So glad you are interested in getting a toad. It has been a delight having mine for the past month. We feed him mealworms and crickets, and I have lots of plants- a Philodendron Brazil and a button fern inside his cage. His “cage” is a large plastic box that I had laying around in the garage, but he seems comfortable and it retains humidity really well. I would honestly recommend getting a 10 gallon tank that you can see him well in. Easy to to cover up if yhe landlord comes by. He can jump really fast and far, so a tank that is long enough and a lid if he likes to climb would be the best option

Leaf litter, moss, and the first round of clean-up crew have been added!

I go out of town sporradically until July 5, so I won’t be getting a baby friend who needs food every other day until after that, but man this has been a project that is good for my soul

That’s such a nice arrangement Claire! Where did you find the leaves and the plants?

Plants were all Walmart garden center finds! I have a shockingly nice Walmart with an even more shockingly nice garden center, it is a real delight.

Leaf litter was collected from my local park and boiled for sterilization, should be all oak, maple, and crabapple leaves

Ok thank you! Just make sure the plants don’t have any fertilizer in the dirt that could harm a reptile. I find my plants at my mom and pop reptile store.

Edit: I believe if you shake all the dirt off the roots and then replant in the reptile store that would be ok

Yep! I shook all the soil I could off the roots and rinsed them, so there should be very minimal potting soil left on the roots

Thats what I do, I don’t unfortunately have any real dedicated plant stores so what I do with my store-bought plants is clean as much old soil off as I physically can with my hands and then thoroughly rinse the roots, stems and leaves before planting directly into my enclosure substrate.

A lot of my local hardware stores have gardening centers with a ton of options for reptile safe plants for a reasonable price, I just tend to pay closer attention to the plants now knowing some of them are mislabeled.

The only plants I don’t do store-bought are the Varigated Pothos I have in almost all of my builds. They come from cuttings of a giant Pothos plant my parents have kept since I was a child. They make for really good starter plants because they are so easy to keep alive and propogate.

Don’t I know it! I just counted, and I have 6 large pothos plants right now that came from the same parent plant I keep propogating, its like the perfect (near) infinite plant hack :joy:

I love to watch Serpa Design’s videos on youtube, and he has some excellent advice for vivariums and aquariums of all kinds! And his videos are so soothing, I use them to sleep sometimes

Thank you Claire for the tip! I will definitely try to remember that! I need all the ideas I can get because I am not creative at all!!! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts::smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

His videos are FANTASTIC, and he covers a ton of species. In terms of amphibians I know he has done a cane toad habitate and some fire belly toads too!

Oh my! I hope I don’t get any more ideas on animals…:joy:
