Apartment Frog/Toad Suggestions

You absolutely will haha!

Ms. Caron, do you have a brand of heating mat for the side of toad enclosures (or similar) that you have found works well? (Question open to anyone else as well)

Actually the Southern toad doesn’t need any extra heat other than the temperature of my room which stays at or a bit above 70 degrees. This is one of the reasons I chose this toad type. I watched a video from Snake Discovery on them btw.

With all the extra heating in my room :joy: it’s by far the warmest room in the house! Also the toad enclosure is going to sit on one end of my huge bed so it will be off the floor……

I would say that any heat mat would work fine as long as it’s regulated. @cmsreptiles Christina I’m sure is very knowledgeable on this subject though……way more than me.

Very minor update:

  • I removed the peperomia and replaced it with two tiny hostas, since they will handle the low light, humidity, and frog bounces better. Eventually the hostas will outgrow this bin, but that’s okay.
  • More moss, leaf litter, and isopods added
  • Red wiggler worms added for soil turnover and a snack for the frog if they come to the surface

I’ve also started two small red wiggler bins for a food source

What type of isopods do you have? I have a bunch of spring tales on hand but no ISOs……

Your tub looks so pretty! I hope the toad doesn’t mess it up!

The toad/frog will absoluetly mess it up a little, but I plan on getting a quarter sized baby, so it won’t be able to do serious damage for a bit

I have Greek Silver and Common grey isopods, as well as common sowbugs in here. I also keep zebra isopods and dairy cow sowbugs, but those are fancy and won’t be in with the toad because I don’t want them to be snacks!

I have OFFICIALLY made my purchase! My new friend will be shipping to me around July 6 (whenever the temps around that time cooperate). I can’t wait to meet my new buddy and show them to you.

No spoilers, but I bought from Josh’s Frogs :face_with_hand_over_mouth: :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Making final adjustments to the bin in the next month - I have replaced some of the more delicate plants with english ivy, which is an invasive monster when used in landscaping, but I think is underutilized in the hobby. It has sturdy woody stems, thrives in low or high light situations, keeps the ground below it very moist, and provides lots of cover.

Congratulations on getting a new little friend! I was thinking you could have a little guessing game on what kind of friend you got for the FROGBIN™ though the surprise always makes it better!

Wanted to share a ‘fail’ to show it truly does happen to EVERYONE and it doesn’t mean the end of the world.

My boy arrives tomorrow, and I decided to switch his waterbowl to a smaller size to reduce ambient humidity a bit. It was a smidge too high and I figured it was the huge water bowl. Well it was, in a way - the water bowl was leeching water all up into the soil below, and when I removed the bowl, a soupy mess with the start of that anarobic bacteria smell! Panic! Boy arrives tomorrow!

So I ordered some cocosoil and sphagnum moss and leaf litter to add to the soil, and I have removed the worst of the wet slightly stinky soil, and will let the whole bin air out and keep removing water over the next several days

Big Beef now has a temporary bin to stay in for the next week or two while the big bin stabilizes, and honestly this is probably for the better

I caught the dampness problem before it really let to any stagnancy, and since there is no frog in there yet I can REALLY mix it up. Plus, now he will be in a smaller bin for a bit where I can monitor him and his food intake, and let him relax while feeling hidden.

So a horrible panic inducing realization of my mistake, but ultimately salvagable and for the better in the long run

A word on the bright side! I’m so glad you discovered it before he was living in it. It could have possibly made him sick….. I can’t wait to see him!!!
