Apartment Frog/Toad Suggestions

+1 to this - as someone who’s thought about it before, this really makes my willpower not to get one wane! :sob:

Beef has been here 2 weeks as of yesterday, and I wanted to show off how much he has already grown in that brief time!

Well no wonder Claire! With a mouth like BB has it’s a wonder he’s not twice that size! By the way where did you get the Pac-Man pelllets? I’m wondering if my little Redhead would eat them! :face_with_monocle:

He’s gonna look like Jabba The Hut one of these days. :joy:

I am using Pac Attack pac man pellets, which I was able to get shipped from Walmart online, but I believe you should be able to find in a variety of places! They are truly SO easy to use, and it is super nice knowing this mega-mouth is getting balanced vitamins and minerals built in to the food
I think we will approach Jabba the Hut very quickly :joy: :joy:

Beef says not to be embarassed, he loves getting to be the star of the show and let people learn from his glory!

I think you should address him from now on as “Sir Beef”!!! His face demands it! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Oh, his face IS very demanding haha. Here is my view from my chair while his bin is pulled out to give the plants light access. The gnat mesh obscures it a little, but his face is directly turned towards me, and he just stares haha. That little Y of color is his headstamp above his eyes and down his snoot.

He’s waiting for FOOD and you’re his Lunch Lady! :frog::joy:

How dare you exist and not be food? Or at least presenting food, all the time?? :joy: Mr. Beefy looks extremely judgmental. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: and somehow still adorable. Not really sure how he pulls off that tricky trick, but he does.

Side note, I’m frustrated by the community format. I keep losing threads . :upside_down_face:

He has been able to very quickly upgrade from red wiggler worms to night crawlers, so today he got his first bigger worm, and sucked down 3 like they were noodles! He is just a big ole sassy mouth :joy:

So!
Being a graduate student/research assistant in the summer is weird because we can’t get contracts to ensure funding, so money can run out at any time.
And money ran out with 2 weeks left in the summer, so rather than stay and work for free, myself and Beef went home to Ohio for 2 weeks.
He handled the travel well, continued to eat well, and showed minimal stress - he was angry after each drive, but buried for a few hours and came back up hungry as ever.

I took this as a chance to completely re-do his set-up. I made some newbie mistakes with the first bin (no drainage layer, substrate composition was too heavy) which resulted in constant moisture problems at the bottom. So the old bin will become a plant-only terrarium, and Beef has an updgrade!

I will post pics later of the new enclosure, he is doing great and is buried down digesting a meal.

I hesitate to make the claim that this species is ‘bombproof’ as I know amphibians can be incredibly sensitive in their own unique ways BUT - this little dude is an absolute tank. He travelled well, regulated himself and was back to eating within 12 hours of each trip, and showed little to no behavioral evidence of stress. These pacman frogs should be more popular - easy to house, easy to care for, hunger strikes are rare, and they don’t seem to be intelligent enough to be easily stressed (I mean that as a compliment, I promise )

Wow, what a trek you and Beef have had! Sounds like both of you handled the challenges smoothly, if not precisely with elation. Good to hear that all is well.
