Apartment Frog/Toad Suggestions

:joy: When he opens his mouth and sticks his tongue out the rest of him kinda shrinks! It looks like you got a nice healthy paccer Claire!

His tub is fairly deep right? If that’s the case do you also put a lid on it when you’re not “swooning” :joy: over him?

He’s such a goober!

His big bin is about a foot tall, with 8 inches of substrate, so he really can’t get out, buuuut I have a mesh lid that I can remove to check the enclosure, then keep on to keep Beef in and gnats out (external velcro strips keep it in place)! The bin also has an actual solid lid, but I will probably only use that if things are really dry or cold and I need to trap heat/humidity in there

Also he seems to love the big bin now that it is renovated and much nicer, I’m actually so glad the moisture issue happened when it did, it made the end product so much more natural and cozy for him

Big Beef is the most ridiculous looking yet completely adorable creature! I’m so glad you have him. He doesn’t know how lucky he is.

We need to induct BB into the “Clean Plate Club” Hall of Fame!

Oh he is THERE! Mr. Man has eaten 3 times for me already! The classic pacman feeding response is incredible to witness, he is ready at all times for food…and that is the only thing his brain can process :joy:

After just a week, someone is feeling brave enough to explore when he wakes up in the evenings!

He has also learned he can see me as I sit in my chair, and he directly faces and judges me :joy:

He also taught me to always use my tongs to shift things around in the bin, even when I know where he is buried, because apparently this little hamburger can lunge FAR - the bite was 0% damage but 100% effort, and his tongue was sticky! Silly man, I am not food!

You are not food but you had entered HIS territory so he was telling you as nicely as he could to STAY OUT until you have MORE food!

Silly me! I forgot I am only allowed in there unless I have an offering for his majesty :joy:

The beefy boy had his first confirmed shed with me last night, so silly to watch! He also got incredibly sassy afterwards, and struck at me from in his bin when I was 5 feet away in my chair, so apparently changing clothes makes someone a little irritable :joy:

I didn’t even know they had a shed event!

I didn’t either! I wonder if my southern toad has or will shed? :face_with_monocle:

I believe Frogs and Toads shed their skin and eat it like Geckos do.

I was bewildered the first time I caught my Gulf Coast Toad peeling off a sleeve of shed skin from his arm and eating it, I had no clue they had shed cycles before then.

Yep! The main difference is the skin is very wet, at least for moist amphibians like pacman frogs, so they just gape their mouth really wide to break the old skin and then slurp it up like pasta noodles hah!
I was wondering what he was doing, he kept opening his mouth wide and pawing at his mouth. I was worried he had some substrate in his mouth and then I saw him pull some shed off his arm.

Their sheds are very subtle and quick compared to dry reptiles I think! But I know other frogs like whites tree frogs do it, so I imagine they mostly all do?

Tried to get a picture of the beef booty, and this man whipped around and came at me immediately hahaha, I’ve NEVER had an animal this reactive to movement before

He is just a cute little goober! No brain, only food. Oh and SASS! He is an absolute hoot and easier to feed than any other animal I’ve had - I HIGHLY recommend!
