Hey, I’m a 17 year old keeper with a 4 year old female leopard gecko that I’ve had since I was 13 and she was a hatchling. Shes my baby and I love her to bits. She has been losing toenails recently and I believe it’s due to her having reptile carpet in her enclosure. Along with a low humidity and maybe expired multivitamin. I am working on fixing other issues I’ve noticed like the humidity. I am also looking at changing her setup to natural but not nessicaralily bio active to see if that fixes the problem. I would like to do a soil and sand mix or something like that. I have never done that before as she is my first reptile I’ve owned. I’m looking for some advice on what to do with the enclosure and the losing toenails part. I love reptile and plan to work with them as a career. I am just worried about her and I would like to try and give her the best life possible.
If I were you I’d switch to something other than loose substrate, which can be ingested if crickets are introduced. I have unprinted newspaper in my Leo enclosure. Or paper towels or a piece of slate will work well too. Definitely get rid of the carpet, which can harbor bacteria. The carpet could be snagging the toenails? Do you have a small dish of calcium available for your Leo?
Okay, I did paper towels briefly the first time she lost a toe nail. It’s just the nails are tearing out I think the nails are regrowing but I’m not 100%. My lepored gecko doesnt eat crickets so I don’t think the loose substrate would be a bad option. My gecko is picky and also can’t see well due to her morph so she eats out of a bowl and I rarely give her crickets but I do sometimes just so she can try to hunt. I’m trying to find something Thats not super expensive but also practical for me. Shes had reptile carpet before that was smooth so her nails didnt snag then I got her a new one to try because her old one was gross. I was her carpet every few months with baking soda, vinegar and reptile safe dish soap I do have clacuium avaiblide for her but I’m thinking the one I’m using is expired cause it’s like 15 years old.
Most definitely buy her some new fresh calcium. I use Repashy Calcium Plus. If she is eating out of a bowl you could probably get away with a loose substance of some kind, just not 
% sand…..
I don’t have any idea about the loss of her toenails though…..
