At the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga

So we’re at the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga today and I took a few pics to share. Not everyone gets a chance to go to a really nice Aquarium, but this one is very nice and accessible. Chattanooga is a lovely city to just visit.

The Aquarium is divided into two separate parts, salt and fresh, with several interactive exhibits on both sides. There are “water’s edge” exhibits as well.

I’m going to apologize in advance, all of these were taken by phone camera, and many came out “not so good.” Especially the fish pics, just really hard to get good ones through the thick acrylic.

Also, there are alot of pics. I’m going to crop and salvage as best I can, but some of these aren’t going to make the grade. Bear with me, please. Just thought you folks might like to see some cool critters.

Last bit, the Aquarium is part of a larger conservancy effort and specializes in turtles and tortoises, so there’s a bunch of these, including babies. I’m not a huge turtle guy, I don’t know all the names.

First up, the butterfly exhibit on the “ocean side.”

It was school trip day today, so some of the cooler “hands on” stuff was packed solid. But at least the kids were learning and having fun!

Moving on, through the ocean side of things…

These were really the only good shots. I took many, but with lighting and the movement, most didn’t turn out well.:frowning:
The exhibit is huge, btw. With many large fish and sharks, and many levels for viewing.

On to some “island life” I guess?

Over to the freshwater side. This bit is really cool, you start off going upstairs to the “start” of the river, on the mountaintop. With exhibits that include the shoreline, there are snakes, otters, gators, turtles and more. And fish, lots of fish, in the whole collumn. The Aquarium has a focus on the Tennessee River and it’s wildlife, but there are exhibts showcasing areas from around the world.

Black Rat Snake

Gators and turtles, IDK, never seen gators in TN, but they’re cute anyway…

This is a huge alligator snapping turtle they have here, it has been here forever. I have no idea what was in there, but he was going to get it…

A nice pair of Eastern rat snakes (two different morphs). A little spring courtship behavior.

Ok, these may post funny. But if I ever do a really big freshwater tank, it might look like this…

Ok, these are not good, but the only ones I have.
“Crocodile Lizard” and endangered Four Eyed turtle

Something about the lighting for this tank made the camera nuts, but I did get the eye spots and those were cool.

A mossy frog tank, with tadpoles, and the pics were almost all unfortunate, but here goes…

For anyone who ever wondered…
This is a cooter, it’s a type of turtle.
No, I don’t know what makes it different, but apparently it is…

Turtle nursery! One of the coolest parts, and they share it with us!

Warning! Baby turtle pics ahead.

Hope you all enjoyed this. I had to leave out so many pics that didn’t turn out. :sob:

Still, a nice day, even with the packs of school kids.

If you get a chance, it’s worth the trip and Chattanooga is a very nice place with lots of good food and fun stuff to do. The scenery is beautiful, the mountains are amazing. Fall and spring are special. And the Lookout Mountain site is a place that deserves contemplation and respect.

Very cool! I think my favourites are the octopus and the paddle fish.

Though I also really love the expression on this alligator’s face. Pretty sure he’s plotting world domination.

Heh, yeah. Might just be glad he didn’t have any of the little pink claw tippers. My wife referred to those as “bougie gators”.

They started feeding time for the octopus right after I took the picture and everything was a mad swirl of arms and bubbles. :flushed::pleading_face::scream:
