I’m getting a ball python next week, Should i use a large tub or a 40 gallon tank?

It’s up to YOU and what works for YOU and your animal so long you provide proper husbandry it can be achieves many different way, tank, pvc cage or tub.

If it is a baby starting it in a 40 gallon tank when you are just getting into them is not a good idea. Babies do best started in small tubs where they feel secure, and where it is easy to make the temps/humidity the correct levels.

I have always kept mine in tanks but I’m looking into a rack system, but ultimately I have to agree with @stewart_reptiles it is up to you to choose the setup and provide the proper care and husbandry for your reptile
