I have a female that laid a healthy clutch 2 years ago gravid currently that is currently 50 days post pre lay. She was 2500 grams prior to breeding so im wondering if I should still expect her to lay on her own.
I should also mention that my rack temps were lower than usual when I checked and the only other female I bred went to day 45.
Do you have a photo of her currently so we can see her body condition?
Also is she showing any other signs? Has she been laying upside down or doing circles in near her hot spot? Has she been lethargic? Has she been off or on food?
Also can you tell us the temps your working with?
If your other female laid on day 45 after p.o.s then there is a chance this girl will lay soon.
But without a picture of the BP and information on her behavior and husbandry (temperature) then theres no real way to tell whats going on.
Shes acting fairly normal and hanging around the hotspot a lot, currently I’m working with temperatures sitting around 89-90 as her belly heat and I’ll include a photo of her on this reply
Here’s her picture, she’s acting fairly normal and hanging around her hot spot. She’s also sitting around 89-90 degrees
She definitely has the lumpy gravid appearance so I’d say she’s definitely gravid lol.
89-90°F seems to be a little high, I’d go for 86°F max though idk if this has any impact on egg laying. The eggs haven’t migrated down to the tail yet so she isn’t ready to lay, I’d begin to have concerns if the eggs have migrated down but she hasn’t began laying within 1-3 days. She definitely looks like she is getting ready for that moment though so I’d keep a close eye on her!
Edit: Other signs to look for are her becoming restless, moving around, curling around one spot, and laying with her belly up. This is normal as the snake is trying to get the eggs pushed down to lay.
Thank you for your help, you just think she’s taking her time??
She very well may be. Still I’d keep an eye on her if any complications show up.
You said something regarding the eggs migrating to her tail, is that something to watch for or is that like right before the eggs are laid?
Years ago, when I didn’t heat the room that my snakes were in, I had a couple females go 50-55 days.
Yup. She’ll start acting restless and circling or twisting herself up. It helps move the eggs closer to the vent. That’s basically snake ‘labor’ before the eggs actually start getting layed.
I agree she does have a gravid look to her. So hopefully soon. If she hasn’t layed by day 60 I would be concerned about eggbinding for sure.
Yes it is something that happens right before laying, it is very obvious in appearance. The issue is if it stays like this for an extended period of time with only a few eggs laid or no eggs laid. That is what egg-binding usually ends up like.
So it’s not looking like she’s even at the point of laying yet?
Not quite, I’d say in a couple days. Just look out for the restless behavior and then you’ll know its going to happen.
So her moving around a lot?
Yes she will be moving quite a bit.
Ahhhh!
Congratulations! I’m glad everything turned out ok! ![]()
