Basic Leachie Questions

Hey all
Just a few standard questions, I am looking into getting a leachianus gecko as a pet, I breed crested geckos and am used to their size, temperaments and behaviours and just had a few clarifying questions:

  • vivarium sizes? With my creaties I go with a 30x30x30 exo terra, then a 30x30x45 one, and then for the adults a 45x45x60cm, is there any similar logic with these guys? I have an assortment and don’t know which ones i will want to keep (i have a 30x30x30 exo terra, q 45x45x45 and a 45x45x60, and have read that they will want something bigger than that again?) I have space for a 60x45x90 exo terra?

  • attitude? How friendly are these guys? I know that working with them is a must, but is there any chance i can even approach the thing? Handling is a big consideration, and i want to know if i will see them at all (obviously in the evenings) and if i will be able to touch and handle them, with them being somewhat willing, i dont want to stress them out constantly

  • how much do these guys realistically eat?

Thank you to anyone who can answer even one or two of these questions!

Hi there!
No expert here, hopefully others can pop in, but here’s all I know:

  • Diet seems to be very similar in terms of foods/mixes/supplements, but I do imagine they eat a bit more than cresties, but I wouldn’t imagine by an astounding amount.
  • They are significantly bigger than cresties (the largest gecko in the world I think?) so I’m not sure if you’d need larger than a 60x45x90, as I’ve seen many kept in smaller enclosures as they aren’t too active. I personally would always err on the side of larger than necessary rather than too small, but hopefully someone can chime in on that!
  • I’ve heard that a LOT of leachies do NOT share the temperment of cresties or gargs, and are a lot more territorial. I’ve seen videos of them barking and biting at handlers. Now, this may be offset by choosing a breeder who handles their babies regularly, but overall I don’t think they are considered nearly as chill and friendly as their tiny cousins.

Again, I am absolutely no expert, and all this info has just entered my brain passively as I do reptile research for fun, so when other keepers respond, absolutely hold their answers in higher esteem!

That really depends on the locality/mix. If you have a smaller/medium sized leachie that would be fine but once you get past those smaller ones I wouldn’t go smaller than a 90x45x90

It’s seems more to be how well they are socialized rather than anything else. The big difference with leachies vs cresties is when a crestie is unsocialized it will run. Leachies will hold their ground a lot more. Leachies can be a bit harder to socialize but it is by no means unreasonably difficult.

From knowing breeders.
45x45x90, 45x60x90 or a 90x45x90 for a leachie as they’re a lot bigger than a Crestie! Depends on locale too as different sizes really.

Attitude can vary a lot. Some are just moody others can chill out.

Feed every other day like a Crestie, obviously they’re going to eat more as they’re larger. Same with bugs, they usually take more! X
