Hello there! We are about to upgrade our beardy to a 4x2x2 enclosure. I have read a lot about uvb and distances, trying to calculate the strength through the mesh screen, etc. My son did a custom background using spray foam, foam board, and dry lock. The main basking spot is 10 inches from the screen. I have a 10.0 T5 24" uvb lamp. Based on the zones it describes on the back, it is too close, but it also notes that the screen may cut it by as much as 50%. Am I overthinking this? Thanks!
@logar Do you have time to help with this post dear Logan? We need your expertise!!!
That is a very nice enclosure!
What strength UVB is it? That screen should allow around 75% if not more of the UVB through. It really shouldn’t be all an issue if you put it above those ledges but I would put it like this so It creates a gradient just like you want with heat. However everything still would depend on the strength UVB.
Please excuse my horrible drawing skills, but a Chromebook that is made for schoolwork isn’t the greatest thing in the world for it lol
@logar I meant smiley faces not laughing faces on my reply above! My old eyes are starting to play mean tricks on me!!!
I am attaching a picture of the graph on the back of the box (it came with the bulb on the right). No % is given. Based on that graph, it seems like the basking spot will be too close, but it depends on what the screen blocks. Thanks!
Arcadia recommends at least 16" between bulb and basking area. when i was researching how to accurately measure UV with my meter i just got (Solarmeter 6.5R) I ran across something that had a chart that showed how much UV was lost when using a screen top vs having a hood or solid glass top…cant remember where it was of course. I remember quite a bit was lost out of the top if it was a screen, more than I had realized would. If i run across it again I will share it.
Got him all setup this evening. Without dropping the money on a UV sensor, are there any signs I should be aware of that I need to get a lower strength bulb?
There really isn’t much to tell if it is too much but as it is for a beardie I wouldn’t worry much
