My absolute favorite comments have to be… you know those snakes are going to eat you. To which I laugh & reply…they arent big enough to eat me… kill me maybe… if I was being stupid. Lol.
Oh & the poisonous comment. 1st off…not poisonous…venomous. & no I like my fingers. & you realize thats illegal without premits rights.
People also retell me the story of …oh if its laying next to you…its sizing you up to eat you.
People are silly
thanks this helps alot I thought you were supposed to just handle him all the time geuss I am wrong which I am fine with (:
We all get things wrong sometimes. It also probably doesn’t help that you started handling him the day you got him, as even personable reptiles like beardies can get stressed out from that.
My other favorite question is have you ever been bit. Hundreds of times…lol. I do relocations from residents.
Them: “That one’s Creepy. It’s almost albino!” shudder
Me: " …Well yes, he’s Leucistic. He doesn’t have NO pigment, just only white. He’s got a little lace doily spot on the back of his neck, white on white, it’s so cute!"
Them: “Well whatever. It’s creepy.”
Me: *holding up a picture of Finnley going : 3 “You mean this widdle face??”
Thats funny…showed a picture of my new lucy to my Boss. It creeped him out so bad he could look @ her pic.
Him: holy cow…its solid white…it popped outta a nightmare!!
Me:??? Seriously?
Right? So rude!
The first time I saw a BEL BP, I was stunned. One of the most beautiful creatures I’d ever seen, like a white jade sculpture, i thought. You’d assume my pure Black House Snake would be the one people are scared of, but no, it’s my Black Eyed Lucy!
Actually I held him the second day but fair enough I am 100% going to follow the advice you gave thanks!
People are just scared to death of my Solomon island ground boa. Granted she is wicked looking with her head…but I litterally cant get People to believe she isnt venomous…or a boa…lol lol
1st time I opened her cage & showed her to my uncle…he was like Hell No! & ran outta my living room… Bahahaha
More often than not I just get asked why I have them?
Like people genuinely seem weirded out I own reptiles and amphibians…
It’s like hello, have you seen that face?!
Me and my mom laugh about this now but it was a real problem before.
Me to mom : Hey Mom, we need to call the vet because Kai has some symptoms that look like a RI.
Mom to me : Ok…(we call vet)
(For context, I normally am the one scheduling the appointment)
Mom to vet tech : Hi, we want to bring my son’s boa into see his vet, my son thinks he has a RI.
Vet Tech to mom : What type of boa is it?
Mom to me : Riley, what type of boa is Kai?
Me to mom : He is a common boa
Mom to Vet Tech : He said the boa is a common boa.
Vet Tech to mom : So he is a common boa constrictor?
Mom to everyone : What did you just say? Did you say boa constrictor?! I have a boa constrictor in my house, what?!
Mom to me : You said he was a common boa but you are wrong. How could you get something that you don’t even know what it is?
Me to mom : No, I was right. I told you he is a common boa. Common boas are the same thing as common boa constrictors. They aren’t true red tail boa constrictors like BCCs.
Mom to me : So how does he eat then?!
Me to mom : He uses constrictions to kill.
Mom to me : No way do I have a snake that constricts.
Me to mom : What else would you like it to be? Venomous? It’s not like there’s many options.
Mom to me : But I didn’t know that it was a boa constrictor!
Me to mom : Yes he is a hypo BI, common boa constrictor. I told you this mom.
Mom to me : I probably ignored you, it’s just so hard to hear a vet tech say it.
Mom to Vet Tech : I guess it’s a boa constrictor.
Vet Tech : Awesome, let’s get you guys an appointment for a boa constrictor. Ma’am, that is the same thing as a common boa.
Me : * dying in laughter on the other side
That funny!!
I had called to make a vet appointment for Ahsoka my Solomon island ground boa.
Vet tech to me: so its a boa constrictor?
Me: No its a Solomon island ground boa.
Vet tech: so ots a common boa…but like hog island.
Me: No thats a Locality of common boa constrictor. This is a separate species.
I Get to the Vet…on her paperwork…Boa Imperator.
Granted this was a 1st year student…the vet kinda knew better…course by then …I was like No! Candoia paulsoni!
My friends mom freaked out when she referred to her milk snake as a constrictor…cause it is in that since…it took alot of explaining for her mom to realize it wont get over 6 ft.
Oh forgot about this one…one time I had a snake out showing my Aunt
She goes: Im scared…Dont you dare throw it on me!!
Me: Throw it on you??? Why in the F… would I risk you injurying me snake???
Her: silence *** with the most dumb founded look ever…
To be fair to the “snakes crawling around the house” people, I have spoken to and seen/heard of people converting rooms for larger lizards and such. Like a room for a Tegu or Black Throat Monitor. So I wonder if that contributes lol… It’s still hilarious, but yeah haha
Actually over all the years…Ima show my age here…but last 20 years…its alittle different…I ve gotten the free roam questions…&/ or the… they all live together question. To the masses (NRP)for years on end…the reply…No…they are all in separate " lock down cages". & I litterally mean…they are “locked” somehow. Rather it be clips…slide doors locks…velcro. but to the masses that are NRP…it sounds like a lock & key. (Which Ive watched in person litterally make them feel more comfortable in real time) It is always the appropriate way to answer that question in my humble opinion.
An 8ft Nelson’s Milk Snake would be cool as tho lol
Oh oh you mean my 6 ft reference…its was just an example for an out lier for a Honduran. Although Black milks can get huge
I actually have a friend with an Asian Water monitor… He has 2 bathrooms in his house…& he is getting ready to covert one to her whole cage with a screen door…lol
