Black eyed lucy breeding

So im looking to pick up a female black eyed lucy and raise her up a few months for breeding, But what im wondeirng is if i was to breed lucy female to a normal male would i make lucy hets or how would that go down? Also can u breed lucy to lucy or should that generally be avoided for genetic issues?

Do you know what morphs your black eye Lucy will be?
You definitely need to study up on the genetics before even considering breeding this female. Thankfully there’s a handy ‘morphipedia’ here.

But it sounds like you aren’t even aware that it’s an allelic combo, not a recessive.
Black eye Lucy is not compatible with blue eye Lucy either, so you really need to research more one what you hope to produce before anything else even.

I’m going to agree with @armiyana on this one. I studies for an unholy amount of time before picking up specific morphs that I wanted to breed. I very specifically looked for genes that went well with each other and universally such as pastel, banana, and cinnamon. I still screw stuff up and I researched for weeks. I also spent a lot of time researching some complexes like the black eyed and blue eyed.

For what information I will tell you (and still highly encourage you research on your own) BEL is a complex, not a single gene. Some genes like mojave, bamboo, butter/lesser, and russo are part of the blue eyed lucy complex. When you breed two genes from this complex together you get a leucistic snake. So in other words a super of any of these (for example super mojave) is a blue eyed leucistic, and any combo of these genes (for example a bamboo russo, or a mojave lesser) will also create a blue eyed leucistic.

For what you are specifically asking with your snake, say for example your snake is a super fire (this is one of the most common black eyed lucy combos I see). If you breed it to a normal none of the babies will be leucistic, however they will all be fire. The only way to produce baby lucy ball pythons with this snake is to breed it to another ball python with a gene from the black eyed lucy complex. So if this snake were a super fire, then if you bred it to a fire you would have 50% fire babies and 50% super fire (aka black eyed lucy) babies.

A note that I want to add: Black eyed lucy and blue eyed lucy are not compatible. They are totally different complexes. Therefore if you bred a super fire to a super mojave all of your babies would be mojave fire. These babies are NOT leucistic snakes. They would however, have one gene from both lucy complexes in them making them good powerhouse males for breeding both blue and black eyed lucy’s.

I suggest that you find what your snake is and look up some combos between his genes and others from the black eyed lucy complex. I suggest this because not all of them are as white as you think. Some are considered leucistic but that doesn’t mean they are actually white as snow. So if you are going for an all white snake, look up the combos and find what pairing would be best for you.
