Not sure how doable this is, but it would be nice to be able to weed out possible legal issues before or at the point of inquiry. Many species have places where they cannot be purchased or sold at all, yet buyers in those states can still see/inquire after animals they can’t legally own.
For example, as a corn snake breeder, I know there are at least three states that outright ban any keeping, regardless of origin (GA, WV, HI), yet I still have to individually check every potential buyer’s profile to make sure they’re not from one of those places, because often times there are folks that are not aware of the laws in their area. I have even seen breeders unaware of these laws, which is not a good thing.
Agreed. I think most of us have language in our store profile to the effect that the buyer is responsible for knowing and adhering to all laws, rules, and regs for animals in the area in which they live. No one breeder can realistically know the minutiae of all local ordinances. We can and should know about (and of course follow) statewide laws such as @noodlehaus cites. Still, I spend what sometimes feels like a lot of time explaining things like, no, I can’t send a corn snake to a buyer without proof of permit. Even after sending the link to the relevant regs and how to apply for the permit, some just don’t get it. “Well, the guy at the expo just sold me one so I don’t need one,” is ridiculous, but It happened.
I don’t know nearly enough about tech to know how complex this feature would be. Seems like it would be hard. It would be truly lovely, though. Perhaps if a filter isn’t feasible, there could be a go-to feature within the marketplace with links to the state DNRs, maybe USARK which has lots of info and links, with the caveat that each person must know their local rules. Saying this is good. Making a one-stop, accessible way to help people new to the hobby or to selling find the info in MorphMarket where they’re already looking at animals would be fantastic.
