Hey all! I have a bit of a funky one for you. Had eggs pip on day 60 of incubation, and for my own peace of mind I decided to cut small slits in them to check on the non pippers and make sure everyone was alive.
As I cut into one egg, imagine my surprise when the yolk comes out bright blue! Baby inside is alive and responsive, but I wasn’t able to grab pics as I didn’t have my phone on my at the time. Checked on them this morning, and the blue goop has since turned green - baby is still alive and responsive.
Ended up cutting larger slits in the other eggs just to verify that nobody else was hiding a colorful surprise. “Blue goo” as I have dubbed them has since been tucked away from the rest of the clutch in the corner of the egg box as a precaution, but I am hopeful they will emerge as normal with the rest of their siblings.
I seem to remember YouTuber Robert Barraclough (Royal Balls) describing the multiple sac layers below the egg shell. You cut through all of these sacs when you cut. One sac layer contains the waste from the snake. It contains fluid that can be green. I believe this is what you are seeing. He warned that this can be a risk to the snake since you’ve basically exposed the snake to its own waste, possibly days before it’s ready to leave the egg. But I wouldn’t be too concerned with it. I’m sure it’ll all work out.
Hey guys! Happy update on the clutch and blue goo in particular. Everyone’s emerged from their eggs and blue goo looks good, albeit a bit small and with a visible kink. This baby was a twin, but the other baby passed sometime in the egg which is why I believe I was seeing the strange yolk colors.
I’ve already decided that if blue goo is able to eat food and pass waste normally they will have a forever home with me or one of my very trusted friends.
Sorry to hear about the twin and the kink. Kinks definitely feel like a common topic the last 2 weeks. I actually have a boy with a kink that did really well that a breeder trusted me with when I picked up a different snake from them. He’s doing great at 2.
The biggest concern I would have if the little one actually eats and passes stools normally…is if it’s female. The 2 year mark will be very important to start monitoring. They could potentially have complications if they ever go through ovulation. If it’s a male… I’d personally just use smaller meal sizes for him and be more careful following how well he’s defecating.
That’s a really gorgeous looking clutch though. So congrats overall!
Dad is a black pastel dinker hypo het pied, and mom is an enchi hypo. Not sure if I’ll repeat the pairing down the line, but I do have plans to at least try him with a couple other females in the future. My main goal was to prove out the dinker gene as 8 ball complex or not, but I’m not entirely sure yet - going to wait until after first shed and get some help from the person who started the project on if any of the babies carry the dinker gene.
Thank you!! As bummed as I am about loosing two potential babies, I’m just glad that I have these five who seem to be thriving so far. Regardless of sex, the kinked baby is gonna be a pet only, even if they go to a friend - hence why I won’t be releasing them specifically to the public. It’s part of my code of ethics that helped me make the decision almost instantly upon seeing Blue, so I personally will be ensuring this kiddo gets a happy life, no matter how long it is.
Oh definitely! It just sucks that even without breeding there’s that risk for the females ovulating or even trying to partho.
The breeder I got my boy from had an incubator fail on him, so he had a few different varying degrees of kinking.
Some were so small we almost missed it…but I was specifically buying a male for breeding from him and that’s how we got on the topic. I was originally picking up a male and noticed he had a very small kink right at the ‘hip’/cloaca region, so I picking up a new male from a half related clutch. He had one that had a VERY nasty kink, but she crawled out of the egg on her own and shed, ate, pooped … We had the possible eggbinding talk. I don’t know what they decided after that, but it was definitely a worse kinking and bigger risk for theirs.
I actually had a clutch I was really looking forward to this year kink out on me… It’s so frustrating. Unfortunately mine needed to be culled. I’m really hoping it was just a fluke…but I have a second clutch from that male in the incubator cooking so we’ll see.
There’s something about black pastel hypos that will always hold. Special place in my heart. No matter what new morphs and combos come out, I still love them.
Got some good looking babies in that clutch, congrats
Hey all! Little Blue has been doing pretty good since my last update on him, and has had two meals. We’re still working on food response as I’ve been force feeding him as per other breeders and my vet’s recommendations, and I am really hoping he can do all the normal snake things and make an awesome pet. He’s so friendly and inquisitive, and he’s super relaxed when handling. The other siblings have also been slamming food and are having their second sheds.
Hey all! Happy updates for Blue after a couple more rounds of force feeding he is now eating on his own, unassisted! He has taken several meals on his own now, all live. He’s still really tiny, but considering I have been trying every trick in the book to keep this boy alive, I am over the moon.
His body condition plummeted for a while because he was refusing even force feedings, resisting any attempts I made to feed him and his swallow response would not kick in - no matter how far down I worked a feeder, he would just spit it back out. But I didn’t want to give up on him, considering he had so much fight despite being so weak, so after some time to decompress and not deal with the stresses of feeding I offered him a live feeder, which he took! He’s still not making the connection to frozen thawed being food, but that’s plenty alright for now, considering he is eating, passing bowel movements, and looking so much better than before.
I’m also adding a photo with his siblings I held back, to give you a real idea as to how tiny he truly is - micro ball python, anyone?
