Boa Constrictors!

That’s awesome! Yes it’s a planter box I made for my wife when she mentioned she wanted a raised garden. I’m not gonna lie, it was a ton of work but the happiness it’s brought my wife and kids was well worth the effort. She’s never been much of a hobbyist but from an outside perspective that’s exactly what it is for her. A little escape and focal point.

I used redwood 2x6 and corrugated metal roofing for the siding to save on wood costs. We are about 2 years in, the top 2x6 has weathered but all is still strong. I’ll warn you though, that love did turn into a chicken coop the next year, ha! Also, very fun and both makes for some special quality food. We have our own litter wannabe urban homestead going on.

I wanted it to also double has a hang out spot, fire pit area.

Here is just after filling the planter before I put gravel in. (Wish I did Astro turf or stone/pavers)

Then i got the task of a chicken coop run and tried to tie that it with the planter box.

Oh my goodness that’s fabulous! Your wife is such a lucky lady! You must have construction/ contractor skills in your bloodstream! The only thing about having chickens is - having chickens! They would ALL have names and be egg producers only! :joy:. Love the lighting too! :+1:

So what part of the country are you in and I am assuming chickens are allowed in town? Some neighbors can be kinda “picky”……. :joy:

Again, your wife has a piece of heaven in her own backyard! Good for you!!!:pray:

Edit to add: Never mind! I can see orange trees as well as a pool so you must be somewhere very warm. I am so jealous! Forgive me Lord!:joy:

Thanks for the kind words, Caron

We are in Orange County, CA. They are allowed but with our short walls and tight quarters we talked to all our neighbors prior to getting them. All are cool with it and get eggs when we see them. Walking the neighborhood I hear a couple houses clucking so we aren’t the only ones. We do get quite a bit of coyote activity here so I over built it a bit but so far, so good!

I harnessed the power of YouTube for most the inspiration  it’s a gold mine for DIY projects. Building reptile enclosures and aquarium stands for past projects came into play for sure though :raised_hands:t3:

Oh snap, you’re not that far away from me. I’m in Santa Barbara.

I’ve always thought it’d be fun to have chickens, but I live in a condo, and I doubt the HOA would approve. There’s a house just across the street from me that has chickens though.

Wow, that looks seriously amazing. Honestly what I make isn’t going to be quite that extravagant. I’m planning to do a 4’x8’ box in cedar that’s about 18”-24” tall for her to do veggies and what not in. She started getting into plants in the last year and a half, and we got a lot of nice produce from it last year.

I would love to have chickens, but our HoA won’t allow it. Otherwise I’d be out there building a coop too lol

Definitely a smart plan on the metal roofing. Red cedar plans aren’t cheap, that’s for sure!

Well I have to say God bless you for being so kind to your wife as well as your neighbors! I am sure that the fresh egg are great for the taste buds and easier on the wallet as well!

It is so heart warming to see people who do things for the good, even if it’s just building a vegetable garden and a chicken coop! I surely wish I lived closer to a lot of you guys all at once! There are some awesome people here who I would love to meet including you!:pray:

Honestly, that’s the best plan. I wanted an area to hang out in, in the middle but had I done 4 x 8x3-4’ boxes they’d be so much easier to work in. Keep in mind just how much dirt it’ll take to fill that footprint, I was shocked and ended up contacting a tree trimming service to fill the bottom and offset some dirt costs. When the time comes, check your local building supply stores if you have a truck or know someone with one. You’ll save big time getting a half scoop of dirt in your truck over buying bags at HD or Lowes

Jay at arabesque & more has some killers. Very fair pricing as well.

Or maybe if I’m successful at breeding him one day we can line up a trade

Definitely we’re looking at doing only the top 8-10” of soil probably, the rest will be a mix of cardboard, sticks, other “brown” materials. She already had that planned before I even knew it was a thing lol

Rosalie just shed today so I took her out while the sun still had the ground warm. Love this gentle (soon to be) giant.
