There isn’t much price difference between a 12x12x18 vertical terrarium (11 gallon) and a 30 gallon vertical. I’m wondering if for a six month old gargoyle gecko if the 30 gallon would be too overwhelming for it.

In most cases, with most reptiles, the size of the tank isn’t the issue, but rather too much open space. So if you set it up correctly, with plenty of cover, it’s unlikely to be an issue 
On the off chance that is does end up being an issue, you can always house the gecko in a plastic tub temporarily, and move it back into the tank when it’s grown a bit more.
