I want to upgrade my boas to some nicer cages (this homemade one is just too heavy, and getting harder to clean). I want decent sized, but also the ability to have a couple stacked.
My idea was-
48”x24”x12” (or 15”)
Please note that these are for females, but I have a Central American X BCI cross, and a BCI. My BCI is 5 years old and only about 6’, so I’m thinking she’s shorter but is going to thicken out now. These snakes are future breeders, but are pets right now. I take them out weekly, and they’ll have extra outdoor time in summer.
Do you guys think this is okay? My girl is content in her 48”x24”x24” now, but doesn’t climb like she used to. the Central cross climbs constantly right now, but she’s a 6 months old and lives in a 41qt tub currently (33”x16”x5.5”)
I’ve seen boa racks about 9” tall, so I’m thinking the 12” is fine, since they’ll be getting socialize weekly and sometimes daily?
You’ll get varying opinions on enclosure size. I built 2 48x30x18 enclosures for my adult females and it seems like plenty of room. I need to stack more high going forward, so I just finished a 48x30x12 and it looks fine as well. I was worried about the height, but really isn’t that big of a deal and I don’t think it will be hard to work in/clean.
I had a large male BI in a 48x24x24 and felt he was cramped in that footprint but this was early 2000s and I was feeding much different than I do now. He was a pretty big boy. If you can go longer or wider, I would but if not I think they’ll be just fine and happy.
Awesome, thanks! That size is sort of maxing out what I can do length and depth wise (tiny room with old baseboard heaters, so we can’t get them close!). I was thinking they’d be okay, but I definitely appreciate feedback!
I think those sizes would be perfectly adequate for smaller boas. I plan to give my boa something a bit bigger, but she’s an unknown mix of localities (and female), so I expect her to get bigger. I think 4x2x1 would be fine for smaller localities.
Hi, I also agree that those sizes should do you good for a while.
If you were looking for recommendations on stackable caging it seems AP cages and Boaphile Plastics are pretty popular.
I only have experience with Boaphile currently, but if you have questions about those, I’m happy to help.
I like the big ARS rack system cages. Have had it for several years now and love it. Easy to clean, feed, and take large boas out. Even have trained boas to go back in their rack from the holding cage when cleaning.
These look amazing!! Maybe one day lol, wayyyyyy out of budget for me currently! Thinking of doing the reptile basics cages. Only issue is I’m not sure if I can still use a heating pad with PVC? I’ve heard it doesn’t really work as well
Here is a small rack I made with a wire shelving system. I used the Sterilite 15 qt. tub # 1754 for baby boas and the Sterilite 74 qt. tub # 1969 for sub adults and boas about 6 feet long and less than 12 to 15 lbs. The 1754 tub measures 17 inches x 11 inches x 6 - 3/8 inches, and the 1969 tub measures 44 inches x 19 - 3/4 inches x 6 - 3/8 inches. You can fit 8 of the 1969 tubs or 36 of the 1754 tubs on this rack.
Set up like this picture cost me about
$350 with 4 inch X 44 inch flexwatt
on each shelf. I made this in the late 90s, so it’s probably a little more expensive now to make.
I also have 1/4" masonite on each shelf to cover the flexwatt so the tubs don’t set on or rub the flexwatt.
