I’ve had her for about 4 years now, given to me by someone who was neglecting her. He didn’t have her parent information, which i previously didn’t mind. Lately though I have been considering trying to breed her and want to know what my options are.
Looks an Anery to me. Really pretty sandie!
As @caron said, she’s anerythristic, or anery for short. It removes red pigment, creating a grayscale animal. She could very well carry unknown hets, but that’s impossible to know without any info on her lineage.
Very pretty sand boa!
I’d be very careful doing this, most people would advocate against breeding rescues and neglect cases. Knowing she was neglected and choosing to breed her could result in health issues. Inadequate care at any point in their life can result in breeding failures whether it be difficulties during pregnancy/being gravid, or poor clutches/litters that either die during gestation or fail to thrive once they are out in the world… I’m not saying you can’t breed her… just be mindful of this. The results of breeding can vary depending on what the severity of the neglect was.
Also as others said I agree that she is Anery.
Thank you! I dont know why i hadnt considered that before. Her neglect was improper heating for an unknown period of time causing her to not eat. I wasnt able to determine more, since the guy very quickly stopped talking to me after i took her in.
I agree with @cmsreptiles Christina on the breeding subject. Since you have no history on her and she was obviously neglected, I would not risk her life or the lives of the babies. This is a bit of extreme reasoning but you just can’t be too careful with the “unknowns” in her past. Of course it’s totally up to you. I am just gently cautioning.
Anyhoo you have a little beauty! Best of luck to you and her!
agreed to not breed. Just as a list of sorts not to so it could be easier to understand the why part
You don’t know anything past anerythristic. Why put more animals into the world when you’re gambling with the chances of genetics on living things, and even then could use a far better dam for a nice sire
Underlying diseases, that happens so often with exotics that it just slips by. I had Nido in my collection for a hot second without realizing it until one snake got super sick and I had to get rid of what ones did have it as pets and inform the adopters. Why expose more animals to that, whether it be a sire or babies, especially since KSBs are live bearers
Breeding experience. I’m tentative with which animals I consider breeding, given I’ll admit, I don’t have the most experience and I’d rather not give this a find out the hard way style given I’m dealing with living things, and it’s costly at that morally and literally. And even if you did have experience things like mothers having a tough time, there’s a reason why people experienced with it don’t breed rescues/ question snakes
She was NEGLECTED. I put all caps, because that is an immediate red flag for treating this animal with anything but the utmost fragility and care regardless of improvement. Any animal or human alike will FOREVER face complications from physical neglect, between not being able to handle sickness as well and not ever being able to have as stable or good of body state as a cared for animal would, which having babies is quite possibly the most strain you can put on a fragile system like that
Thank you!
I want to thank everyone who replied, I truly don’t know why i hadn’t considered her previous life as long lasting damage before. I do still hope to get another sand boa but she will not be breed. Admittedly I’m going to make jokes about the new one being her platonic boyfriend. But whoever joins my family of rescues is going to be named befittingly.
For anyone curious, my current sand boa is named Helen. I intend to name any male I get first “Gerald” as I feel that fits.
Once again, I very much appreciate the comments, including those confirming her morph to be what I thought. But, especially those reminding me to take good care of her and treat her with the least amount of stress possible given her history.
She’s the sweetest baby, and I think I’d simply had her so long I forgot I wasn’t there to protect her her entire life.
If i do end up getting another I’ll be posting pictures. I’m so glad i was introduced to this community
