I’m interested in breeding my female BP Mochi (in the future, not anytime soon), but i dont want to buy another snake (since i only want 1 more BP, but im also interested in breeding). Would it be a good idea to breed her with someone elses male BP, or should i just deal with it and buy a male? (Separate question: what would be a good morph to pair an Enchi Leopard Pastel with?)
I don’t really know much about breeding but I do know that you will have to make a entire year simulation of the reptiles natural climate . Also hognoses lay around 10 eggs so you must be prepared . Videos on YouTube explain it better than I can (you’ll have to watch a lot ).
There are still some people who will ‘loan out’ their reptiles which is the reptile equivalent of studding. The downside is it can take months before the reptiles do anything sometimes, there can be a lot of scammers and there is always the risk of disease because there isn’t vaccines like with canines.
I would honestly just consider purchasing your own or if you have a friend with a male consider bringing up the question with them.
As far as what to pair, this is always a question that I feel is better when you know what you want to produce. What combos with at least one of your female’s genes do you like?
That would be my first step. Plug in one or all on the market side 's search and just browse for a bit.
Do remember though that there’s always the other side to think of and consider.
You will need to know of a vet that you can take your reptiles to in case of an emergency. Males and females can prolapse, females can eggbind or you can have babies hatch with medical issues you may need to treat or euthanize.
You’ll also need to consider housing and feeding for everyone. The market is oversaturated so there’s been a lot of breeders selling their collections and others just not able to sell their hatchlings at all.
Very helpful! Thank you!
My advice is to have your own you never know what the other peoples snake could bring into your home had a couple times where just getting new snakes posed a risk (1 was from a expo and id thought that made a “safe” snake) and i didnt know but people on here informed me i was lucky and what the risks were since quarintine isnt really easy when “borrowing” a snake and if hes yours you know health and how well they are taken care of
Thanks, I appreciate it!
I have loaned and have taken animals in on loan for breeding purposes. In every single case it was with people I had known for many many years. And almost all of them had a very loooooooooooooooooong discussion about all the potential outcomes
Short version is that if you loan an animal out, you should be ready to accept that animal as lot to you, either trough death or dishonesty
If you are not willing not accept that risk, then you have your answer
I have no desire to “loan” any of my animals out but I am curious as to what you mean in this statement? Color me uneducated……
Edit to add: ok I think I understand this now. The “trough death” should be “through death “ which makes sense to me. I get the “dishonesty” part! ![]()
People get taken advantage of ALL the time when it comes to breeding loans. I might have a nice animal I’m willing to loan somebody, but in that willingness to loan comes the realization that I may very well not get the animal back. It could die in their care (either through neglect or a fire or disease or lack of vet care or accident), they could decide ‘nah I don’t want to send it back’ for any number of reasons. Unless it is something that you have 100% trust in and have known for years ( I would even say decades) it’s a big risk, and honestly even if you know them it’s still a risk. You could also loan an animal on certain terms of getting back a certain number of babies or certain $ but at the end of the day it’s their word against yours and many, many times people just take advantage.
